Police Blotter Week of 7-25-11

House Hunters theft scheme, a cab driver attacked and a stabbing on California Ave SW

The property owner of a house on Kenyon Street in South Park was burglarized while trying to rent the property. On Sunday, July 17 shortly after 4 p.m. the female property owner/victim was approached by a man and woman who asked to see the house because they were interested in renting. The female was described to police as being white, 5’4”, brownish hair, black clothes and “orange stain around her mouth from Spaghetti-O’s she was eating out of the can.” The male was described as white, 6’2”, brown hair, wearing black with a “slight stutter that appeared to be due to drug use.” As the victim began the house tour she noticed the male had slipped away. The female suspect “kept asking random questions about things” in an attempt to keep her attention. Finally, the victim asked where the man was and the female, without a word, walked away on foot. As she walked outside, the victim saw the male running from her office trailer nearby with her laptop. It was a tricky plan … with one exception. The victim knew the suspects and told police where they currently reside and that they spend most of their time scrapping metal at scrap yards.

I dag er vi alle norske: Nordic Heritage Museum to hold vigil for victims of the Norway tragedy

At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, the Nordic Heritage Museum will hold a vigil for the victims of last week's tragedy in Norway.

Honorary Consul of Norway, Kim Nesselquist, will present to stand in a moment of silence and offer prayers.

On Friday, July 22, Norway was the site of twin terror attacks - a bombing in Oslo and a shooting attack at a youth camp, collectively killing at least 76 people.

“Our thoughts are with our neighbors in Ballard and across Seattle who have family and friends in Norway," said Mayor Mike McGinn is a statement on Facebook. "It is hard to make sense out of violence like this, particularly when it is directed at children. We join our neighbors in Ballard, across Seattle and throughout the world in grieving this terrible loss.”

Join members of the Norwegian community on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at the Nordic Heritage Museum for a moment of silence. The museum is located at 3014 NW 67th Street.

Card Kingdom and Cafe Mox create a home away from home for Seattle's gamers

By Chris Foster, Intern.

Magic is happening on Leary Avenue. With the opening of Card Kingdom, gamers from all over Seattle now have a place to call home.

Card Kingdom — which is the retail store for Cardkingdom.com, one of the top distributors of “Magic the Gathering" in the world — offers much more than just a place to buy games.

“The whole idea was to create a community,” said Dan Tharp, manager of Card Kingdom. “Seattle needed a central hub for the gaming community.”

That’s exactly what gamers are getting. The property is much larger than a typical game store, allowing customers to spread out with their games. They also offer two game rooms that can be rented out, a library of games that patrons can borrow for free in-store use, and a café connected to the store where the customers can try them out.

Card Kingdom’s dedication to the gaming community is evident by the way they run their business.

“We are a company run by gamers,” Tharp said. “And we have a passion for this. We’re gamers, and we like to be social.”

Card Kingdom is finding success at being social.

Veteran reporter, Barry Mitzman, to host 'Ask the Mayor'

For the next three months, Seattle Channel's Ask the Mayor will be hosted by the award-winning veteran journalist Barry Mitzman.

Mitzman is currently the Director of Seattle University’s Center for Strategic Communications and previously, Mitzman had an accomplished career as a newspaper and television journalist and is well-known to Seattle audiences for his on-air work at the regional PBS station, KCTS/9, where he hosted Serious Money, Friday, and Ask the Governor. His regional TV news programs and national PBS documentaries earned many honors including a Peabody award, broadcasting’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize.

On Wednesday, July 27, join Mayor Mike McGinn and Barry Mitzman for the July episode of Ask the Mayor.

Does Mayor McGinn support the proposed $80 car-tab fee for city transportation projects? Why does the mayor want to extend the hours of some bars throughout Seattle? Why did the mayor pull all City advertising from Seattle Weekly over its escort ads?

Seal Sitters banners going up along Alki Beach as reminders to leave seal pups alone

SealSitters, the marine mammal organization dedicated to the health and welfare of seals, whale and others is placing 10 banners on light poles along Alki Avenue. Robin Lindsey of SealSitters said, "They will be placed in September and October celebrating the return of harbor seal pups to our shores.

Pups, however, could begin appearing any day now as Seal Sitters has responded to reports of tiny pups in the Everett area - newborn pups still with the umbilicus cord attached (http://www.blubberblog.org/files/b2f6eada952ae02e6d6ee74d9ee3ff17-265.h…).

The rookeries in our area have lots of pregnant females and newborns. Most pups that visit Seattle beaches in the fall are weaned and struggling to survive on their own. All the more reason to let them rest undisturbed so they can conserve precious calories before returning to the Sound in search of food - it truly is a matter of life and death for them."

Update 2 for July 26, 10:30 am: According to Sgt. John Urquhart with the King County Sheriff's Office, fire investigators will be using a crane to remove debris from the upper floors over the next couple of days in hopes of gaining access to lower levels and discovering the root cause.

UPDATE 2: "The courtroom was chuckling" as court-appointed forensics experts testified today in Knox case; results put prosecution on the defense

Report, testimony, casts doubt on key evidence that imprisoned Arbor Heights student

UPDATE 2: at 3:10 p.m.

Amanda Knox's stepfather, Chris Mellas, who lives in the West Settle neighborhood of Arbor Heights, explained his interpretation of the scene in the courtroom today by phone to the West Seattle Herald. He was seated with his wife, Amanda's mother, Edda, Edda's sister and husband, Christina and Kevin Hagge, who live near the Morgan Junction, and Madison Paxton, Amanda's best friend, from UW, who recently moved to Perugia for support. Also seated with them were the parents and sister of Raffaele Sollecito, Amanda's boyfriend at the time of the murder, also convicted.

"The two forensics experts were just shooting one bullet after another at the prosecution's DNA evidence. The report was already issued to the court in advance. Today was candy, all kinds of stuff that was not in the report. The report was, 'Yeah, this wasn't the evidence you were looking for.' Today was the video of the collection of the bra clasp. (In photos above. The official collection of this piece of evidence occurred 46 days following the murder of Meredith Kercher, Knox's roommate.)
