Harry Potter-series editor charms book lovers at Secret Garden

By Elizabeth Wang, UW News Lab

Arthur A. Levine, co-editor of the Harry Potter series visited Ballard’s Secret Garden Books on Nov. 2 to read from his new children’s book, “Monday is One Day.”

Parents, fellow authors and book nerds gathered in a corner of the shop for a chance to meet Levine, listen to him talk and get their books signed.

The book is written as a poem, illustrated with colorful pictures of families, about working parents and having to part from their children at home. Each day of the week is spent in a special way and the weekend is a time to be spent together as a whole family reunited.

Levine’s inspiration for his book was his only son, Max Emilio, to whom the book is dedicated. He started writing it when his son was six months old. Levine had to return to work and it was their first time apart after his child’s birth.

“I was really thinking about how we were going to be apart for the first time,” Levine said. “I think [I wrote it] mostly to comfort myself.”

by Kyle Howard, photos by Kurt Howard

Kennedy Catholic went up against Decatur on a wet and rainy night for a girl’s soccer playoff match Wednesday night, Nov.2, at Highline stadium.

Please click the image above for more.

Rain was pouring all game long and the temperature was a chilling 45 degrees. These two teams had met previously at the beginning of the season with a big Lancer shutout victory over the Gators 6-0; the Gators at the time did not have all their players available to play due to injuries.

The scoring started just two minutes into the game when senior forward Jamie Hoffman scored the game’s first goal and what would prove to be the Lancers one and only.

American Hero Quilts holds auction

press release:
Our wars are still going on, although we want them to stop – they haven’t stopped, and it won’t stop for quite a while. In Iraq the fighting and dying may be ending, but not in Afghanistan. This means more wounded are lying in battlefield hospitals, still others are waiting to be transported to hospitals stateside and still more are in hospitals here in Washington State, waiting for their wounds to heal so that they can return home. Regardless of our own personal stand on all this, we can do something.

But what can we do? American Hero Quilts, a Vashon born effort, is doing its best to give all those wounded soldiers something tangible, to ease their suffering and as a token of our appreciation. Recently the quilt project received a letter from a nurse who was herself wounded:

“Like mosquitoes in a tent”: Ballardite concerned about frequent overflying planes

When longtime environmentalist David Ortman moved to the quiet neighborhood of Loyal Heights, the least he expected was that years later he would become engrossed with commercial airplanes.

"Flight traffic has increased significantly in my experience," Ortman said. "To say we don't have a noise problem would be a lie. It's not the decibels, it's the constant nuisance like mosquitoes in a tent."

After getting the runaround when trying to file noise complaints with the Port of Seattle and the Federal Aviation Administration, Ortman started to investigate the issue himself.

Since July 2010, Ortman has chronicled well over 2,000 Sea-Tac flights that flew right over his chimney, many at or below 3,000 feet.

Using the Port of Seattle's Webtrak, an online flight monitoring system, Ortman writes down the flight number, time, altitude, and destination.

"Sometimes planes fly-over mere minutes apart," he said. "I have clocked them as early as 4:40 a.m. and as late as 1:30 a.m. That leaves me with only three hours of quiet."
