SLIDESHOW: Petco opens in new location on Alaska Street; Grand Opening set for Sat. Nov. 5

By Patrick Robinson and David Rosen

After a move from California Ave. that took a little more than a week, Petco completed its move to 4100 s.w. Alaska Street overnight from Nov. 1 and opened today at 9 am.

According to Assistant Manager Anne Lemon the new store takes up a little less space than the former 14,000 sq. foot location but still carries 10,000 plus products, employs 19 people and has some upgraded features.

The grooming salon is upgraded, the habitat designs are all new, an improved and larger surveillance system is in place for security and access to the QFC upstairs or the parking garage is available through the elevators.

Petco would be nothing without pets and the store is now carrying such creatures as Baby White Australian Frogs, Fire Belly Toads, and African Emperor Scorpions, plus some new turtles in addition to their usual array of dogs, cats, fish, and birds.

Solid Gold Nutrition Dog Food is now in stock and the new refrigeration cases are stocked with raw, natural foods for pets.

At Large in Ballard: Catching up with John

I love movies. I love watching them and talking about them. Re-watching them and insisting that others watch them. I love them in black-and-white and color, in English and any other language as long as there are subtitles. I love them silent, and musical. Then there are movies that make me want to be a filmmaker.

Ballard resident John Helde makes that kind of film, feature and documentary, short and full-length. From his short film “Hello,” shot primarily on a Washington State Ferry to his documentary work-in-progress “Field Work: A Family Farm” his works combine beautiful shots with character-driven stories, whether fiction or non-fiction. And I get to watch him run past my house.

Mug design features West Seattle theme

Seattle area tableware designer, Rosanna, and Bartell Drugs have teamed up to create a joint project that celebrates West Seattle with a custom design with a West Seattle theme.

It is one of more than a dozen neighborhood mugs, plates, and Christmas ornaments that celebrates neighborhoods in the Puget Sound area.

These mugs were created as a way for people to feel more connected with their neighborhood. West Seattle was chosen because of its historical importance, beauty, and personality.

Rosanna & Bartells are hoping to further foster community pride and will be purchasing a park bench for the neighborhood with a location to be announced later. An announcement will be made on Monday, November 14th on KING 5's New Day Northwest.

People in the Duwamish Valley will know more about the risks and how to prevent exposure to toxic pollution thanks to an infusion of $100,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The agency awarded the grant on Tuesday to the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition/Technical Advisory Group (DRCC/TAG).

The grant is part of EPA’s nationwide Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) program which is in its seventh year and recently awarded its 100th grant. Through this program, the Agency helps communities across the country to better understand, address, and deal with their environmental problems through local partnerships. This on-the-ground support and funding helps to reduce environmental pollution from all sources, revitalize underserved areas, and improve the health of communities across the nation in sustainable ways.

Letter--Anther Des Moines Prop. 1 supporter

As a long time resident and community activist in Des Moines since 1954, I highly endorse everything Al Isaac said in support of Des Moines Prop 1.

In spite of difficult times, Des Moines is poised for progress. In fact the Des Moines community could lead the way, and set an example of positive progressive thinking and action for all of Southwest King County.

That is needed everywhere, It will take positive progressive thinking to move us forward..

Vote yes for Des Moines Prop 1. That vote is a positive step in the right direction.
