Boys Basketball: Evergreen Lutheran defense keys win

Defense delivered the decision in Des Moines on Saturday, Jan. 14.

Building huge, double digit leads, the Evergreen Lutheran boys' basketball team still needed some late game stops to turn back visiting Northwest School of Seattle and escape with a 64-54 non league verdict.

"Defensive pressure got us the ball and we went and pushed the ball up the court," said Eagle assistant coach David Lindner. "When our defense gets static, we can't run."

After overcoming a 7-1 first quarter deficit, the Eagles showed glimpses of future action by taking a brief 12-10 lead before trailing 15-12 after one quarter.

Evergreen Lutheran's ball hawking defense nearly collapsed the roof of the team known as "the House" in a second quarter hammer job.

Trailing 19-16 in the second quarter, the high flying Eagles commanded lightning-like scoring flashes of 7-2 and 9-0 under the leadership of Andrew Goyins and Jayson Kjenstad to gain clear ownership of the game with a 35-21 halftime clearance.

Evergreen Lutheran's awesome defense forced wild Northwest School shooting and set up the onslaught of an up tempo transition game.

Girls Basketball: Orcas Island beaches Evergreen Lutheran

Learning can sometimes be rugged.

On Saturday, Jan. 14, visiting Class 2B Northwest League Orcas Island reverberated strong wave after wave in sailing to a 74-19 victory against Class 2B Northwest League Evergreen Lutheran in non league girls' basketball action.

Orcas Island improved to 4-7 and Evergreen Lutheran dropped to 1-6 overall.

After this encounter of the toughest kind, the key fundamentals for improvement are still apparent.

"Passing and boxing out are what we need to work on the most," said first-year Evergreen Lutheran head coach Nick Trebesch. "Once we learn how to get across half court, we can start making things happen."

First quarter action provided the theme that would reoccur throughout the entirety of the game. Utilizing a half court trap for steals and owning the offensive boards, the Orcas Island Lady Vikings broke away from a 2-2 deadlock to lead 13-2.

By the end of the first quarter, the Viking lead had grown to 21-4 with no signs of a let down.

Evergreen Lutheran kept fighting hard to only be outscored 20-12 in the second half, but on this occasion was simply over matched in all areas of the game.

Jerry's View - I was lucky: I had two left feet

I admit, I never slalomed with grace in my skiing days on Mt Hood. Catching an edge to me was getting in front of the ticket line at 7:59 a.m. Getting in line early meant one more run down the slopes before lunch. In those days there were no chair lifts. Only rope tows. If you wanted to ski from a higher point you herring-boned your way up the remainder of the slope or trudged up in your ski boots (leather lace-ups).

You would think I would learn plenty watching my hero Baz Byrne glide like a pro down the side of the mountain. He was a champion athlete; he slid, I slud.

We were poor kids growing up on Russett St. in Portland, Oregon. Sometimes, when we got shoes from the thrift store, there were only two left. I mean two lefts, no rights. This could explain why I often tumbled on the slopes. My feet were always tangled. It is the story of my life.

I never won contests of skill at anything. I've spent most of my adult years just muddling through my endeavors. Any successes were due to luck.

Police Blotter Week of 1-16-12

Distaste for exercise?
On Jan. 14 a teenage male told police he was jogging along the 9000 block of 12th Ave S. in South Park when an unknown Hispanic male around 25 years old, 5’6” wearing a baseball cap and dark clothing fired three shots at him. The victim was hit in the thigh and taken to the Highline Medical Center for attention. Police scoured the scene but could not find any evidence. Residents along the block of the shooting were interviewed and no one said they heard or saw gunfire. The victim is expected to recover and the suspect is still on the loose.

They don’t make ‘em like they used to
Someone tried to break into a fiction writer’s unique study on 39th Ave S.W. The man writes from a 1957 Airstream trailer (the big aluminum one) and has books, a desk and an old computer inside. The under-achieving thief made some dents and scrapes to the body attempting to pry the door open, but was unsuccessful.

Emergency Operations Center activated by Mayor McGinn

press release:
With temperatures below freezing and more winter weather in the forecast, Mayor Mike McGinn activated Seattle’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) this morning. The EOC will remain open as needed to monitor weather conditions and provide support and coordination with city departments.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has 18 trucks out to keep major arterial streets clear. Crews are mostly using granular salt. In spots where there is ice they are using liquid de-icer. Most major arterial streets are bare and wet, including the West Seattle Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct, but many side streets are icy. SDOT crews are currently focused on several trouble spots, including on Capitol Hill where Sunday’s snowfall was heavier.

Drivers should use caution if they must travel this morning. SDOT’s Winter Weather page at http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/winterweather.htm includes maps of the City’s snow routes and real-time information on road conditions.

Metro Transit staying on snow routing into Monday

Riders should watch for snow routes and event detours

Weather forecasters are predicting continued cold and snowy weather for the Monday holiday and the work week. King County Metro Transit is remaining on snow routing countywide overnight and into Monday. And, it advises bus riders to be aware it will operate with a reduced weekday schedule as planned for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday on Monday, Jan. 16.

On days with reduced weekday schedules, Metro does not operate some commuter and school-oriented routes, and other routes have individual trips canceled.

In addition to the holiday schedule, Metro buses will be on snow routing again Monday morning. So, bus riders should make sure both that their bus operates on holidays and know the snow routing for the buses they will be using Monday.

Even though weather and road conditions in the morning may not be bad in your area, delays and service disruptions can occur in other parts of the county that affects bus service in your area. Buses will also be chained, which means they have to travel at slower speeds.
