Snow will continue for first half of week; Emergency Operations Center activated

According to the Weather Channel snow is likely to continue for the first half of the week so commuters should be prepared for slick conditions and longer commutes.

Mayor Mike McGinn activated Seattle’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) this morning. The EOC will remain open as needed to monitor weather conditions and provide support and coordination with city departments.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has 18 trucks out to keep major arterial streets clear. Crews are mostly using granular salt. In spots where there is ice they are using liquid de-icer. Most major arterial streets are bare and wet, including the West Seattle Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct, but many side streets are icy. SDOT crews are currently focused on several trouble spots, including on Capitol Hill where Sunday’s snowfall was heavier.

Drivers should use caution if they must travel this morning.

SDOT’s Winter Weather page includes maps of the City’s snow routes and real-time information on road conditions.

UPDATE 3- SLIDESHOW: Spotty snow showers spread across West Seattle

Metro busses operating on snow routes until further notice

As predicted, or perhaps not, snow showers began blanketing parts of West Seattle around 11:30am on Sunday Jan. 15 after some early morning dustings around the area.

Large flakes took over from a mixture of rain and snow as the temperature hovered around the freezing mark but only apparently in the northern section of West Seattle as it quickly began sticking to the road near the top of the West Seattle freeway entrance. Cars could be seen sliding, and spinning out as they tried to negotiate the newly slick streets.

At least one two car accident was seen near the intersection of Raymond and Fauntleroy Way. sw.

Cars were reported spinning out on Admiral Way, about an inch of snow had fallen in the Alki area by 1:30 pm, but White Center was only lightly affected by 1:45 pm.

Travelling south on Fauntleroy Way s.w around noon however showed that the snow was not uniformly falling as the roads were essentially clear. That condition may not last however as forecasters are calling for snow showers overnight and below freezing temperatures.

SLIDESHOW: Fire breaks out at single family residence on SW 97th & 35th Ave SW

Seattle fire responded to a fire at a single family residence on SW 97th St and 35th Ave SW around 11:40 pm on Saturday night, Jan. 14.

The residence was not occupied and neighbors said the home had been foreclosed on in recent days. Incident Commander Kos of SFD said that 35 to 40 firefighters responded to the blaze and quickly got it under control but since holes in the floor were apparent and no information was available from the home owner firefighters did not enter the house.

PIO Kyle Moore said that drills in the Arbor Heights neighborhood, conducted since fire last summer revealed low pressure problems in the area were helpful in dealing with this fire. "They knew that connecting to the 8 inch main on 35th would give them better pressure so they did that immediately ."

An investigation is now underway, even as chainsaws cut holes in walls but Moore said it would be sometime before the cause was known.

The house appeared to be a near total loss. More photos will be posted soon.

SLIDESHOW: Nathan Hale edges out West Seattle in a close one, 65-62

By Kyle Howard

The Nathan Hale Raiders visited the West Seattle Wildcats for a Metro Division matchup Friday night, Jan 13th at West Seattle. Offensive execution would prove be the key for Nathan Hale’s 65-62 victory over West Seattle.

The score was tight throughout the game with several lead changes down the stretch but West Seattle just couldn’t get over the hump. West Seattle had several opportunities near the end but just couldn’t pull it off, with several missed three point attempts they weren’t able to pull off the win.

Both teams played a clean game, fouls and turnovers were limited, but when it came down to it nearing the end of the game, getting easy shots in the paint and solid defense was the difference for Nathan Hale. Raider sophomore Gadisa Margarsa scored a very impressive game high 34 points. On the other West Seattle’s Troy Lingle scored 21, Vidal Griffin 16 and LeTrey Newsome 11.
