Gandy of Rams signs

BELLINGHAM, Wash. --- Kiana Gandy, who earned first-team South Puget Sound League North Division all-star honors as a senior at Mount Rainier High School in Des Moines, has signed a national letter of intent to play women’s basketball at Western Washington University. Making that announcement was Viking coach Carmen Dolfo.

“She’s got great athleticism, great potential and she’s a great student,” said Dolfo. “That combination makes her a wonderful addition to our team.”

As a senior, the 5-foot-10 Gandy helped the Rams to a 27-2 record, league and district titles, and third place at the Class 4A state tournament. She averaged 14.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks.

Mount Rainier’s team captain her last two seasons, Gandy scored 27 points in a game against Kentlake. She averaged 12.1 points and 7.4 rebounds as a junior on a 22-7 squad that finished seventh at state. That year she grabbed 19 rebounds in one contest.

Gandy lettered four years and started three for the Rams. She also earned three letters in track and field.

North Highline Public Safety Forum delves into crime of all kinds

Summertime equals more crime
As of late, car thefts in North Highline are up, according to White Center Storefront Deputy BJ Myers.

“Don’t expect summer to help that,” he added while speaking at the North Highline Public Safety Forum on May 10, sponsored by the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council.

As thefts rise, he said auto recoveries uptick as well.

Here are some tips from Myers on how to avoid theft and help police out:

In the DON’T category
-Don’t leave your car running, even if you are just running into the store for a brief moment
-Don’t leave valuables out in the open, advertising your vehicle as a good candidate for theft
-Don’t leave your windows open

As for the DO’S
-Do have your vehicle’s license number, make and model written down somewhere (not stored in your car) or memorized so you can quickly give police vital information when reporting the theft
-Do park your car in well lit, highly traveled areas

Coach Thomas looks for community support as Ballard Football kicks off 2012 season with spaghetti feed

The Ballard High School football team will be kicking off the 2012 Football Program by having a Spaghetti Dinner May 18th.

Spring football practice starts at the end of the month and this an opportunity for the BHS community to learn about the current program, and meet the coaches and players.

Coach Joey Thomas has high hopes for the upcoming season and wants to share his enthusiasm with the community.

"The expectations are simple: the final destination is the Tacome Dome," said Thomas. "We are a playoff team. But, we'll go as far as our senior leadership takes us. 2012 is going to be different because it's year two. The culture has changed around here at Ballard High School."

"I don't know if you've noticed but it's a "New Era." I feel the kids have a better idea of what's expected and how you have to push yourself and work to acheive a certain level of success-on and off of the field."

Thomas said that as a new coach, he felt a lot of pressure last season, and his goals weren't met.

Outside help may be needed to heal Highline board rift

New superintendent arrives July 1

The Highline School Board will most likely seek outside help in dealing with a formal complaint by one member against a colleague.

Board president Angelica Alvarez said at a special work study session May 7 that she would look into seeking a Washington State School Director Association (WSSDA) staffer to facilitate handling the complaint by Michael Spear against Susan Goding.

Alvarez’ statement came after Goding abruptly walked out of the session declaring, “I’ve heard enough.”

The May 7 public meeting had been rescheduled from an April 26 executive session to discuss the complaint in private. Goding insisted on a public meeting.

Spear’s official complaint against Goding was submitted early this year. But president Alvarez said she delayed dealing with it because the board was in the middle of its search for a permanent superintendent.

Interim Seattle Superintendent Susan Enfield, who didn’t seek the permanent position in Seattle in part because of a fractious board, was hired by the Highline board and will begin July 1.

Alvarez apologized to Goding and the other board members for not communicating well enough.

Nickelsville homeless camp to celebrate one year anniversary in West Seattle on May 13

With a doubleheader wedding to boot

Press release

***NICKELSVILLE MARKS 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY AT WEST SEATTLE SITE***

HISTORIC PRECEDENT SET - COMMUNITY CELEBRATION - AND A DOUBLE WEDDING!

Join us for shared memories and good times
Festivities begin this Sunday, May 13th at noon
Nickelsville is located at
7116 W. Marginal Way SW, SEATTLE
between 2nd Ave SW and Highland Park Way SW

This Sunday, the 13th of May, marks the one year anniversary of Nickelsville at its current site.

On Friday the 13th last year we set out on a secret mission - "The Black Cat Caravan." Over 20 vehicles and 120 Nickelodeons and supporters left old Firestation #39 in Lake City City, supposedly to talk to Seattle City Hall politicians. But we'd already concluded they weren't ready to help, and kept on going toward The Duwamish, back to our first site where Nickelsville started in September of 2008. Slowly but surely, things have been getting better for Nickelsville ever since.
