The City signs off on Missing Link design

The Seattle Department of Transportation has once again signed off on the updated design for the "Missing Link" stretch of the Burke Gilman Trail.

In February King County Superior Court Judge Rogers sent the designs for the completion of the Burke Gilman Trail back to the City of Seattle for further study.

After review of the entire project and consideration of the further developed design of the Shilshole Segment, SDOT has reissued the revised DNS and determined that "this proposal still will not have a probable significant adverse impact on the environment".

Beavers Sports Roundup: Baseball crushes opponent to move on to next playoff game; girls golf compete at state; softball struggles against Inglemoor

Baseball

After losing their first playoff game, the Ballard baseball team faced Skyline in a loser-out round last night.

With a strong 9 to 0 victory, the Beavers move on to the next loser-out round against Newport

The Beavers started off strong, taking a 1-0 lead from the start, but the third inning was definitive for the Beavers. Kangas kicked off the third inning with a double, and was soon batted in. Two more runs quickly followed and then Weber crushes the ball over the right field fence for a 2-run home run.
And after some good defensive play, the Beavers finished the third inning with a 6-0 lead.

With Paul Crane on the mount backed by a strong defensive team, Skyline was unable to score once.
The Beavers added a few more runs while keeping the defensive tight for a final score of 9 to 0.

Airey was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI; Weber 2-4 with on homerun and 3 RBI.

The Beavers face Newport tonight in another loser-out game. The game will take place at 7 p.m. at Woodinville High School.

BHS students successful at the international DECA competition

The Ballard High School DECA club travelled to Salt Lake City to compete in the 66th annual International Career Development Conference earlier this month.

DECA is a non-profit student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

The annual conference is DECA's highest level of competition and encompasses career-focused exercises in finance, marketing, hospitality, tourism, management and entrepreneurship.

It shines a spotlight on DECA’s top performers from around the world as thousands of students compete in a series of unique real-life business scenarios and competitions.

“You cannot help but be inspired by the accomplishments of these emerging leaders and entrepreneurs,” said Edward L. Davis, DECA’s executive director, in a press release. “The amount of preparation done by these students to get to this point is admirable.”

The top competitors in each event are recognized for their outstanding achievements, and Ballard High School students Soley Olafsson and Deme Xenos from BHS brought home the medals.

SLIDESHOW: Sealth loses a close one to Blanchet 2 - 0 in first playoff game

by Greg McCorkle

Walking a batter in the first inning then allowing a home run off the next batter proved all that the Blanchet Braves needed against a Sealth team that played great defense for the next six innings.

Unfortunately the Seahawk bats didn’t show up, and in the bottom of the seventh inning with Seahawk runners on first and second and two outs a line drive to the Braves second baseman ended the rally and the game 2-0 Blanchet.

The Seahawks are still alive as they play in the second bracket later this week. Their opponent is yet to be posted.

Sound Advertising Group and International Parking Management have joined as sponsors

UPDATE Sunday May 20
Parade organizers have shared the latest update regarding the West Seattle Parade. Dave Vague detailed the news:
"Thanks to the spectacular generosity of the West Seattle and Greater Seattle communities we have donations enough to now hold the parade as scheduled on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 11:00 AM! Inquiries and support came from all over Seattle and even as far away as Chicago.

In addition to the individual donations made by many of you we have three great organizations sponsoring the American Legion's West Seattle Grand Parade this year: our returning sponsor from last year - the West Seattle Y, and two new great sponsors this year - Sound Advertising Group and International Parking Management! A huge thank you for all of your participation, we really can't do it without you.

Along with the parade rolling forward, we can now also reveal something new this year - the Float Dodger 5K run that will take place up and down the parade route just before the parade. Clowns, pirates princesses and now sweaty runners! What a day this will be!"

SLIDESHOW: O'Dea blanks West Seattle Wildcats 10 - 0

by Paul Moseley

West Seattle invited O'Dea over to Hiawatha Field today to kick off the 2012 Metro League championship tournament. West Seattle, who finished at the top of the Metro League Sound division was paired against the Fighting Irish who finished 4th in the Mountain Division.

Betraying their reputation as polite gentlemen, O'Dea proved to be rowdy houseguests.

After a scoreless first inning, O'Dea started the 2nd inning with a base hit single. A follow up grounder and error by WS put runners in scoring position at first and third. A hit by O'dea Pitcher Pierre LeDorze drove in a run and put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Another hit by O'dea's Ryland Kerr drove in two more runs. O'Dea was up 3-0 after two.

West Seattle kept their composure and shut down the O'Dea offense for the next 3 innings, but were unable to convert on the few opportunities they created with the bat.
