SLIDESHOW: To Blake Island, Tillicum & back with Alki tour director, West Seattle views

Alki resident Jim Sullivan, former crew member on the King County Water Taxi, is a tour director for Argosy Cruises Blake Island trip to Tillicum Village. In addition to that salmon lunch they serve, plenty of sunny views of Alki were on Sunday's menu. The 1851 Denny Landing, and Chief Sealth's efforts to help them survive the winter were central themes in Sullivan's talk.

Spring Fling event supported "biggest little event" White Center July Jubilee Days

by Greg McCorkle

The Youngstown Center of the Arts on Delridge Way played host May 5 to White Center Jubilee Days Spring Fling fund raising event. Food, an open bar, and numerous performers softened up people wallets for a worthy neighborhood cause.

Many movers and shakers from the White Center community, Burien, and West Seattle were in attendance.

Jubilee Days is the biggest little event in Western Washington. Run by an all volunteer staff and funded solely by donations from the community, Jubilee Days is preparing for their 89th year of bringing fun and entertainment to the community of White Center.

Many thanks to Jesse Lovell of the Company Bar, Stefanie Albeck of Proletariat Pizza, and Sara Sanford of the Edgar Martinez Foundation for putting on this wonderful event.

While the total of funds raised is still being calculated, the early assessment was that the event exceeded the organizers goals.

Proposed capital levy to affect Schmitz Park and Genesee Hill sites

Press release from Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council
We wanted you to be aware that the Seattle School District's current building levy proposal would have Schmitz Park School moving to a new building, to be constructed on the site of the old Genesee Hill school, beginning in 2015. Schmitz Park has grown tremendously in the past several years and is currently the most overcrowded elementary school in West Seattle, with half or more of the students housed in portables now. The capacity of the new building may be up to 650 students, in line with the district trend toward larger schools to reduce costs.

The district will be taking input until the school board votes on the final plan in October. After that, the plan will go to voters next February.

For many high school girls, going to the prom is an event anticipated for years. This year, thanks to the Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence, a number of high school students will be going to the prom in beautiful dresses donated by local organizations and members of the community. They will also have opportunity to select shoes, bags and other accessories contributed by the local community.

In its 4th Annual Project PROMise™, the Highline Schools Foundation collects beautiful new and gently worn formal dresses and gowns, shoes, and accessories from throughout our community and invites high school students in need to “go shopping” for the perfect dress for their prom. The dresses are offered to the girls to keep, or they may return them to the Foundation to be used the following year.

Des Moines Theater gets some beautification before the remodel

In agreement with the Arts Commission of the City of Des Moines, the Des Moines Theater, purchased by developers Tom Lin and Isaiah Dummer, got some beautification on Saturday, May 5 in advance of the building's scheduled remodel.

Kathy Issac of the commission became aware of other jurisdictions that used art to beautify otherwise empty buildings which led to the idea of taking the windows of the theater's retail spaces on Marine View Drive and fill them with art created by local students. "One of our goals is to try to make Des Moines look good on Marine View Drive. We want people to come downtown and see what this wonderful city is all about."

Doing the work on the project on Saturday were volunteers from the Des Moines Youth Council, headed by Andrea Libhart

They had to clean the windows which meant not just washing them but scraping off years of tape, and other stickers then arrange the art in a pleasing fashion.
