SLIDESHOW: Carne Asada Bowl is a big bite of fun; Sealth wins game 2-0

Not surprisingly, coming off a division winning game against Nathan Hale and an undefeated season, the Sealth International High School Boys Soccer team took the cup and the bowl too at the annual Carne Asada Bowl game at Southwest Athletic Center Friday May 4. They beat the SBOC Internationals team 2 - 0.

The game created by former Principal John Boyd is a way to unite two communities that share much in common – many past and current Chief Sealth players have transitioned into high school through the BOC – and celebrate soccer as a diverse, worldwide sport.

The event features a game between the two teams, a giant trophy for the winning team, and a community feast including Carne Asada prepared by Sealth’s own Delfino Munoz and a myriad of sides prepared by Sealth soccer supporters including parents Dave and Nenita Rosario.

SLIDESHOW: Roxhill community comes together with a common thread; We love this school, let's fix it or replace it

Built in the 50's the school is in need of serious repairs and is far too crowded

The community of teachers, parents, children and administrators who comprise and support Roxhill Elementary School came to a meeting Thursday May 3 to share their views about what the school needs, and to hear from School Board member Marty McLaren and Pegi McEvoy Superintendent of Operations for Seattle Public Schools. The issues they addressed, from the need for more capacity to how to what needs to be fixed or changed drew applause from the group of more than 50 people in attendance. There have been suggestions that Roxhill might close or merge with Arbor Heights Elementary. It was acknowledged during the meeting that Arbor Heights in in the worst physical condition of any school in the district. Another suggestion was that a new school might be built on the former Denny Middle School site. But both options are off the table at the moment. Principal Carmela Dellino said the meeting was really about capacity and what can be done to make Roxhill better.

The West Seattle Herald took a tour of the school the following day to record what the kids and others were reporting needed to be fixed and to illustrate what over crowding looks like.

Beveridge Place Pub and owner are stars in Sterling Savings Bank TV spot

Beveridge Place Pub, at 6413 California Ave. sw. is an unusual place. Not just because it's one of the few places where you can bring your dog and have a beer or some wine, but because it's a genuine neighborhood gathering point. The kind of place where people go to do the kind of networking that really matters- face to face. But owner Gary Sink, in his dream of building the bar found that he could not get financing from a bank to go ahead. That is, until he spoke to Spokane based Sterling Savings Bank.

Sink found that they listened to him in 2006, heard his business plan and provided the money. "They really did a good job for us when nobody else would," Sink said.

Getaway driver in Steve Bushaw murder pleads guilty

The four men responsible for the 2009 murder of 26-year-old Steve Bushaw have all answered for their crime with the last of them, 33-year-old Brandon Chaney, pleading guilty to second degree manslaughter in the case, according to King County Prosecutors.

Chaney was tried on first degree murder charges along with Bryce Huber last summer, but the jury was unable to convict Chaney, the getaway driver to and from the murder outside Talarico’s in West Seattle on Feb. 1, 2009.

Chaney entered his guilty plea on May 3.

Huber was sentenced to 32 years in prison as the mastermind behind the plot to kill Bushaw and the two shooters, John Sylve, 34, and Danny O’Neal, 30, received 20 and 15 years respectively in exchange for their guilty plea and willingness to testify against Huber.

The group of four decided to shoot Bushaw because they thought he was behind the robbery of a drug dealer they associated with. Police never found any evidence Bushaw was involved in the robbery.

Regional Animal Services of King County – from cats and dogs to anteaters
Glynis Frederiksen, operations manager for Animal Services of King County, spoke briefly about animal control including quick facts that four to five years ago the department euthanized 40 percent of their animals. Today, she said, the number has dropped to 14 percent. She said the Kent shelter (now called the Pet Adoption Center of King County) has about 5,000 animals that come through yearly, 500 volunteers and a “very large” foster program for dogs and cats.
