Senio Kelemete headed to the NFL; First Evergreen grad to go since Jack Thompson

Former Evergreen, and UW Husky will play for Arizona Cardinals

Former Evergreen High School football standout Senio Kelemete was selected in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL draft this week, going to the Arizona Cardinals as the 151st pick overall.

According to Evergreen Athletic Director Dr. Phil Willenbrock, Kelemete is the first Evergreen graduate to make it to the NFL since the well known Jack Thompson. Thompson was a first-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals in 1979.

Kelemete led Evergreen to a 9-2 record during his senior season in 2007, helping the Wolverines make the state playoffs for the first time since 2001. He was also honored as the Seamount League’s Lineman of the Year on both offense and defense.

"I'm very proud of Senio for accomplishing this, "said Willenbrock, "It just shows you that you don't have go to a private school or a school with a 10-0 record. If you put your mind to the academics, put your mind to the weight room, and put your mind into being a good citizen good things are going to happen."

Roxhill Elementary Community meeting tonight will cover BEX and priorities for schools

The community meeting set for Roxhill Elementary 9430 30th Ave. s.w. at 6:30 PM on Thursday, May 3rd has shifted focus since the potential merger of Arbor Heights and Roxhill is off the table but School Board member Marty McLaren is urging parents and neighbors to attend the meeting to focus on the BEX IV proposal and future school priorities. In a letter to the community McLaren outlines the importance of the meeting:

"Principal Dellino organized the Roxhill meeting after surveying her families and getting 300+ responses regarding the Building Excellence IV proposal. The draft proposal has changed since the survey, and Roxhill families are no longer so deeply concerned about a possible merger with Arbor Heights. Because of this shift, Principal Dellino has graciously agreed to open up the meeting in order to have a West Seattle-wide (and beyond?) conversation about the possible effects of the BEX IV proposal on all of our West Seattle Schools.

TONIGHT: Tractor Tavern offers sneak peek of upcoming Northwest Folklife Festival

By Ana Sofia Knauf, UW News Lab

Northwest Folklife will hold its fifth annual preview party tonight at the Tractor Tavern. Country and folk acts Big Sur, Denver, and the Annie Ford Band will kick off the evening starting at 8 p.m. to give concert goers a taste of what to expect at the upcoming Northwest Folklife Festival over Memorial Day Weekend.

And for those unsure about how to move to the folksy tunes, members of Rockin’ Horse Dance Barn will teach a two-step folk-dance lesson later in the evening.

“The tavern is the ideal venue because the bands are very Tractor-esque,” said Ryan Davis, the marketing manager for Northwest Folklife. “There will be a classic country vibe, which really fits with the Tractor.”

Spanish masterpiece returns to the Seattle stage

After an absence of many years, Federico García Lorca's master piece, The House of Bernarda Alba, returns to the Seattle stage in an adaption by Emily Mann. The first in Arouet's 2012 season, the play will be performed at the Ballard Underground starting next week.

The play follows the story of Bernarda Alba, who after death of her second husband, decrees a traditional eight-year mourning period. Tyrannically ruling over her five daughters, she will do anything to safeguard her family’s place in the community and daughters' futures.

Jealousy and suppressed sexuality quickly rise to the surface, leading to rebellion and a tragically inevitable ending.

The play is directed by Charles Waxberg, Artistic Director of Theatre 9/12, and assisting him will be Arouet’s founder Roy Arauz, who directed last year’s well received The Gene Pool.

A surrealist play, producer and assistant director Roy Arauz said it was once called the King Leir of Spain.
