Prevent crime, have fun at Night Out tonight

It's finally here, the first Tuesday of August, which means Night Out.

Night Out is the perfect excuse for neighbors to get together outside, legally block off a road and have fun. There will be block parties all over Seattle (some of which can be found here, though not all are listed), so make sure to find one near you. Many events are starting between 4-6 p.m., just in time for those getting off work, and promise to go late(ish) into the night.

But more than just fun, Night Out is meant to encourage neighborhood safety and crime prevention. By creating a more aware and closer-knit community, a neighborhood can become that much safer.

Don't forget this weekend that SPD will be hosting "Picnic at the Precinct," Aug. 11, 1-4 p.m., to talk about public safety issues and to take comments from the community.

Local West Seattle psychic Susan Harmon featured in new film 'Craigslist Joe'

Susan Harmon is a West Seattle psychic and spiritual healer whose ambitions have led her in many directions, including political activism and community involvement. But her psychic abilities were what led her to form a network of like minded individuals she called the Emerald Sprial that opened a physical location on California Avenue that the Herald profiled in 2010. While that storefront closed last year for a number of reasons, Harmon managed to snag the interest of documentary film maker Joe Garner.

Harmon said, "Over 3 1/2 years ago, a few months after Emerald Spiral opened in 2008, we placed an ad on Craigsist for artists. Joe Garner answered our ad as part of making his documentary, CRAIGSLIST JOE. The documentary is from Executive Producer Zach Galifianakis

Langhorne Slim sounds like nights made of 'bad decisions and dancing'

Langhorne Slim’s music often sounds like hot, sweaty summer nights made up of bad decisions and dancing -- and last Friday night at The Tractor was an evening just like that.

As Slim rose to the stage, his fedora outlining his recognizable silhouette, he rapid assaulted his guitar with strums as his backing band The Law prompted danceable grooves behind him. Slim may be a folk artist, but he and his band have a Glam Rock attitude with a Southern Rock response.

Many of the songs centered on recklessness, such as his minor hit “Wrong Side of Heaven,” with raucous rhythms and excited guitar lines.
“Most all of these songs are going to be a dance songs in some way,” Slim said part way into the beginning of his set. Jumping up and down Slim hit his head on a hanging speaker, but simply gave it an inquisitive look before going back to zipping back and forth between his band mates -- nothing was going to stop him from riling up the crowd.

Guide to get fresh veggies in White Center and West Seattle now online

The White Center Community Development Association (WCCDA), in partnership with the King County Food and Fitness Initiative and Communities Putting Prevention to Work, has created a new Buy Fresh website that highlights thirteen different neighborhood produce markets and retail stores that offer fresh fruits, vegetables, and a variety of healthy affordable food for multi-ethnic communities. The site has multi lingual headers reflecting the ethnic diversity of the community.

Included on the site are the business profile pages, previously used in print that introduce customers to local healthy food shopping options, including the merchants themselves, store specialties and merchants’ favorite recipes from their home countries. The pages list business hours, EBT and/or WIC acceptance, and a list of the most popular items always in stock.

Bell keeps hydro running

SEATTLE--Des Moines resident and police officer David Bell cannot say he isn't liked in his volunteer job as crew chief for the U-17 Miss Red Dot unlimited hydroplane.

"He's one of my favorite people in the world," said regular U-17 driver Kip Brown as he sat out this past weekend's Seafair Albert Lee Cup festivities on Lake Washington because of a broken leg sustained at the Tri-Cities races the week before. "I'm so fortunate to work with him. I'd go to the ends of the Earth for him."

New crew member Rick Scidmore also had glowing words to say about Bell.
"He's a great crew chief," said Scidmore, a Tacoma resident who works for the sponsoring Red Dot Corporation. "He's fun to be around. He jokes all the time."

Bell has many duties as the crew chief of a hydroplane on the H-1 Unlimited tour besides working on the engine and the hydroplane body.
Saturday he worked to strap in replacement driver Nate Brown -- Kip's uncle who had retired as a regular hydroplane driver three years earlier. Bell also reeled in the straps from a crane used to put the boat in the water, tied the boat to the dock to keep it in place and even swept off the deck.
