SLIDESHOW: Bishop Blanchet Braves wallop the Seahawks 52-12

by Kaelyn Sayles

Looks like the Braves will remain undefeated.

Saturday afternoon, the Bishop Blanchet Braves hosted the Chief Sealth Seahawks in a 52-12 win.

The explosive junior running back for the Braves, Cham Pen, racked up the yards and kept the momentum going in their favor. Overall, Bishop Blanchet's run game dominated, partially due to Chief Sealth’s defense allowing the middle to remain open.

At halftime, the score was 25-0 with Bishop Blanchet in the lead. The Braves were able to continue their scoring streak with 45 unanswered points into the fourth quarter.

Seahawks coach Jerrold Jackson said he didn’t think the team was ready to play Saturday.

“It’s just one of those games where it’s just heart,” Jackson said. “They got down a couple scores and heart just went out the window, so we’ve got some things to correct, but we’ve got heart, too, so we should be back.”

There was, however, a Seahawk who did show some of his heart during the game.

Enter Chief Sealth freshman running back Darren Camacho.

Camacho answered a Braves touchdown with a 64-yard run for a Seahawks touchdown.

Up close and personal with Rapid Ride C Line Sept. 29 at Westwood Village

Metro kicks off third RapidRide line with meet-up at Westwood Village

press release:

West Seattleites have heard it’s coming and they’ve seen the new shelters and stations popping up all over town. But on Sept. 29, they’ll get to experience the real thing when Metro Transit’s big red and yellow RapidRide buses begin rolling into West Seattle.

The C Line gets going with the start of morning service on Sept. 29. It replaces the Metro Route 54 and will offer frequent all-day service between Westwood Village and downtown Seattle.

Residents can learn more about the new service and its amenities from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday (Sept 29) at Westwood Village. A RapidRide coach, Metro staff and RapidRide Man will be located in the parking lot in front of Barnes and Noble bookstore to share information about the new C Line and provide trip planning advice.

The C Line will offer 10 to 15-minute service most of the day – so frequent riders won’t even need a timetable. Metro has nearly doubled the number of trips provided in this corridor; half of the new trips began in 2011 and the other half will be added when C Line service begins.

Playing a game of Battleship on PARK(ing) Day

Did you know yesterday was International PARK(ing) Day? Well, neither did a lot of people.

According to the website, "PARK(ing) Day is a annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into 'PARK(ing)' spaces: temporary public places."

For the event, local Ballardite Marcia Wiley, of wileyware.com, joined forces with some of her happiness-spreading comrades and turned a couple of parallel parking spots on Market St and 22 Ave NW into a makeshift park and community center. For any passersby who weren't too weirded out, they had peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches, a Star Wars Puzzle, arts and crafts and a game of Battleship. They also had signs on display with inspirational messages, such as "Be YOU" and "Yes and Yay!"

The Ballard News-Tribune sat down to play Battleship with Wiley, but was unfortunately unable to finish -- though, with a Battleship and a destroyer sunk, and a cruiser shot, things were looking grim.

Pedestrian and driver reactions to the park ranged from complete aversion to interest and laughter.

The Star Wars puzzle was never finished.

SLIDESHOW: HS Football: Wildcats dominated Cleveland Eagles on Friday night, 51-12

The West Seattle Wildcats thoroughly overwhelmed the Eagles of Cleveland High School Friday night (Sept. 21) in high school varsity football at the SWAC, 51-12.

West Seattle has outscored their opponents 97-18 over the last two games. What’s more important- these were division wins. And you can be sure the other teams in the Sound Division will be taking note of this. Rainier Beach should, they’re the Wildcats next opponent on September 28th at the SWAC.

The game was an all-around victory for the West Siders. Game balls for- The defense that didn’t allow a score until late in the fourth quarter- Cleveland rarely got beyond midfield. The offence that ran around the edges so quickly that it made your head spin and was able to complete passes for large chunks of ground (and the guts to pass on a fourth and seventeen to get a first and goal on the four- game ball for you coach). And the special teams for going for, and winning, three two point conversions and causing a turnover on a punt.
