SLIDESHOW- HS Football: Kennedy rolls over Evergreen, 44-7

By Paul Moseley

Evergreen (0-3)Wolverines hosted the Kennedy Catholic Lancers (1-1) at Highline stadium in Burien Friday night in a Seamount conference varsity football matchup. For Kennedy, ranked ninth in the Seattle Times 3A Football poll, this was their first conference matchup of the season, having lost to the #2 State Ranked 3A Mount Si and beating 4A Roosevelt 26-20 2 weeks ago.

Evergreen, one of the four 2-A teams in the conference, was coming off a 47-14 loss to 2A Lindbergh last week.

Despite Kennedy's standings, Evergreen came out swinging. Evergreen recovered a Kennedy fumble on their first drive, putting the Wolverines in good position. A pass from Ken Dang to Hakeen Trotter took the ball down to the Lancers 11 yard line. Knocking on the door to be first on the board, Evergreen turned it over with a fumble.

Kennedy took quick action. The Lancers Chandler Reed broke open a run 11 to the 35. Kennedy quickly followed up with a 44 yard pass from Conner Richardson to Drew Thompson, taking them to the 9 yard line. At 5:15 in the first quarter, Kennedy's Colin Cossette put them on the board with a TD run. Kennedy up 7-0

Retired actor, Ivan Rado, got a boost from Jimmy Stewart, & Casablanca's "Major Strasser"

Retired actor Ivan Rado, 81, also known in the Mexican cinema as "Jorge" Rado, was 6' 7" at his height, shall we say. He's still up there, and while some may say he resembles George Bernard Shaw, or perhaps the iconic director, John Huston, Rado dismisses such comparisons and said with a toothy grin, "I'd like to think I look just like Mickey Rooney." For you youngsters out there, Rooney is 5' 2", a foot and a half shorter.

Rado loves Brazillian and Cuban music, and American jazz, and plays the "guiro", a Latin American percussion instrument, and another, called the "quijada", a jawbone of a donkey, which he painted with loud patterns. They hang prominently in his office among shelves crowded with books on the cinema, from the mainstream- "Cary Grant: A Celebration of Style" to the edgier Briton, "Dirk Bogart, Snakes and Ladders".

School nurse: Air quality from fires could affect breathing, health

Some of you may be concerned about your health or your children's health after seeing all that smoke in the air. The Ballard High School nurse issued a note on the BHS athletics page about the air quality and what to watch out for. See below for the full note:

--

As most of you know, there are 2 huge wildfires burning in Eastern Washington that are negatively affecting the air quality both east and west of the Cascades. I have seen several student athletes who have experienced some difficulties breathing possibly due to the increased particulate matter in the air (Seattle has been in the Moderate range, just below Unhealthy). If your child has reactive airway disease or asthma and has been prescribed an inhaler, it would be wise if they carried it with them if they also exercise or spend time outdoors. If your child has not been diagnosed with a respiratory illness but finds that they have issues with shortness of breath or increased coughing when they exercise or spend a lot of time outdoors, you might want to consult with your doctor. I am also happy to evaluate them in my office during school hours.

SDOT: No Roadway Closures Currently Scheduled for Spokane Viaduct Construction

SDOT press release

Construction activities on the Spokane Street Viaduct Widening Project continue to wind down as the project moves towards completion. The eastbound off-ramp to First Avenue S, as well as eastbound surface Spokane Street between East Marginal Way S and First Avenue S, have recently reopened. First Avenue S has been restored to two lanes each in both north and southbound directions. The combination westbound on-/off-ramp at First Avenue opened to traffic at the end of August so that motorists going from SODO to West Seattle no longer need to detour across the lower Spokane Street swing bridge.

Westbound surface Spokane Street remains closed while traffic signal installation and other work is being completed, but is expected to reopen by early October.

Some other construction work continues at various points in the project area which will likely involve some single lane off-peak closures over the next few weeks. None are scheduled at the time this notice is being prepared, but will be outlined in subsequent traffic advisories.

UPDATE: Sept. 21 Fauntleroy house fire deemed accidental; $45,000 in damages

Update for Sept. 25
Information from Seattle Fire Department:
Seattle Fire Investigators determined a fire at a West Seattle Home on Friday was accidental. Fire investigators determined the basement bedroom fire was most likely caused by an unattended candle or improperly discarded smoking materials.

The first 911 call came in 1:05 p.m. to reports of flames visible from a one-story home with basement in the 5000 block of Fauntleroy Way SW. The firefighter/paramedics from Medic Unit 31 arrived first and made sure all occupants were safely outside the house. Firefighters ran hose lines to the basement. It took about 12 minutes to knock the flames down.

The American Red Cross was called for the two female and five male occupants who were displaced by the fire. No one was injured.

Fire investigators estimate the fire caused $30,000 damage to the structure and $15,000 to the contents.

Fed up, Morgan Junction neighbors bring ‘flophouse’ concerns to West Seattle Crime Prevention Council

They've had enough.

A group of ten West Seattle residents (representing many more) living near the junction of S.W. Morgan St. and 37th Ave S.W. have reached a boiling point in dealing with a nuisance house in their neighborhood, and brought their concerns to the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting on Sept. 18.

The house, called a “flophouse” by the group, has been a constant source of tension and fear for residents as they described an amorphous group who brazenly steal from their backyards, prowl their cars, sift through their mail and, likely, use and deal drugs. Residents know if they leave a door unlocked, a gate open, or a garage door ajar and unattended, personal items are likely to disappear. The trouble tenants’ illegal jobs hold no regular hours, residents say, as thefts occur from day to night.

It’s been going on for five years and after hundreds of 911 calls and dead end conversations with the City, they arrived at the WSCPC meeting hungry for direction in putting an end to the neighborhood scourge.

“We just can’t seem to shut them down whatever we do,” one person said.

“It’s scary as hell; I can’t take my garbage out,” said another.

Berry...Berry....Good

If you have not stopped in to dine at Berry's BBQ on Ambaum and Southwest 116th, you probably have not seen the beautiful cow in the back of his pickup.

Rufus Berry, a 26-year army vet, and local ad man previously with Cole & Weber, formerly out at SeaTac, said he acquired the cow five years ago from the ad agency when Gateway Computer was sold to Acer Computers in 2007. Berry was the prop man for the agency.

The cow was used as part of Gateway Computer's marketing campaign. Berry had the cow refinished and began using it in his own business.

For the record, Berry serves BBQ beef and chicken to rave reviews from local customers. Enjoy the food. Maybe you'll also be included in Berry's amazing picture wall of celebrities.
