Work on plumbing by homeowner determined as cause of fire; $65,000 damage

Seattle Fire Department's Kyle Moore has released the cause of the fire on Oct. 22 at 9057 21st Ave. SW.:

"A Seattle Fire Investigator determined a fire that caused $65,000 in damage at a West Seattle home last night was accidental. The occupant of the home was working on plumbing when the heat from the plumbing work ignited the wall and extended into the attic space.

At 10:10 p.m., a call came in the Fire Alarm Center reporting flames coming from the wall of a home in the 9000 block of 21st Avenue SW. Engine Company 11 arrived to find smoke coming from the roof of the two-story home. The firefighters used an attack hose line to knock down the flames while the first in Ladder Company searched the residence for occupants and then headed to the roof to cut holes in order to vent the smoke and heat.

Firefighters discovered the fire inside the walls of the home. The flames extended up the walls into the attic. Crews removed two walls and brought down ceilings in order to completely extinguish the flames. It took approximately 30 minutes to completely knock down this fire.

Photo: Seeing Fall Colors Everywhere

For those who haven't stepped outside these past few weeks -- it's officially fall in Ballard!

Ballard News-Tribune's photographer Jerry Gay took this photo while walking back to his car from an assignment. He said he couldn't believe how even the vehicle seemed to display fall colors and thought the composition was too good to pass up.

Gay has done work for several major newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, New York Newsday and as a staff photographer for the Seattle Times, where he won the Pulitzer Prize. You can view his work at www.jerrgay.com

Op-Ed: City Budget addresses Human Services, but doesn’t go far enough

by Elena Carter, Rachel Livengood, Zak Meyer, Claire Star and Kelsey Tyas

The authors are seniors at The Center School, a public high school located on the Seattle Center campus.

While the Presidential candidates are focused on helping the middle class, more and more people fall below the poverty line and out of America’s consciousness. How does Seattle differ from the national conversation on poverty? At least we’re having one. Unlike President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney who focus on the middle class time after time, our city government officials keeps poverty at the forefront of their minds.

Next design for the Space Needle top: Trees

The competition to redesign the top of the Space Needle now has a winner.

The new design will feature a circle of evergreen trees, alternating light shades of green offset by a dark green background, pointing up to the center and the needle.

The design is by 29-year-old Seattle graphic designer Nicole Commins, who wanted to pay tribute the state's iconic trees and, of course, the city's natural beauty. Commins described the design as "if you were standing in the middle of one of Washington’s state parks, looking up to the tree tops!"

The contest received more than 100,000 votes, with Commins receiving the most. Painting will begin as soon as weather permits.

There were six contestants in total competing for the design, including the original Galaxy Gold and a design by Ballard's very own Ryan "Henry" Ward. Ward's design exhibited his now distinct cartoon-y and whimsical style, a sea of playful fish.

The "Galaxy Gold" paint job, which adorned the Needle for the past six months, was the original color of the Needle and was done in commemoration of the 1962 Seattle's World Fair.

Mos Def, Devotchka move audiences at CityArts Fest

By Dusty Henry

At the Crocodile's Back Bar during CityArts Festival, Megan Grandall of the Seattle dream-pop outfit Lemolo sat on the corner stage and held a well-loved sunburst guitar with a scuffed pink heart sticker near the base of the neck.

“I think this is the most romantic song I’ve ever heard,” Grandall said.

Grandall then commenced finger picking the opening chords to Motopony’s “Wait For Me.” Motopony’s lead vocalist and songwriter Daniel Blue watched her from the opposite corner of the stage, beaming. Every few beats, drummer Kendra Cox would hit a floor tom -- the only drum she brought -- with a broken mallet to contrast Grandall’s delicate plucking and comforting vocals.
