Sure Fire Steps to a Saucy Salsa Party

by Holly Brown

When fabulous fresh tomatoes and chili peppers are in full supply, it’s time to throw a salsa party! “Salsa” is Spanish for “sauce,” so we invite our guests to bring a dish to the party that goes with saucy salsa! Then we set the stage for group salsa making and tasting.

Step 1

The first step to throwing a successful salsa party is to prepare for your guests' arrival so everyone has fun, including the hosts! I like to set all the salsa making ingredients out on the counter with all the veggies rinsed and ready to go. I also set up a margarita bar – of course! My contribution to the potluck is likely to be either a Chile Verde or Chicken Verde Enchiladas. Both are great dishes to make in advance. Chile Verde gets better as it cooks over a low heat for 2-3 hours and it's a great way to use my peppers and tomatillos.

Jerry's View: Learning to Drive

Most people who drive cars have had some embarrassing moments
when they did something wrong during their beginner days. Not just
getting a ticket for going too fast or going through a red light.

I had been lucky and had a clean driving history except for
the day years before when I was going too fast down a hill in my 33
Plymouth coupe. I hit a nasty chuckhole which blew the wooden spokes
out of both front wheels. As I watched both wheels with tires go
sailing ahead of me, my car veered sharply to the left and amazingly
went between two phone poles and came to rest head first in a huge
pile of brush left there for later pickup by county road crews.

Is there a God? You bet.

In 1930 my mom took a driving lesson when I was about ten.
Our car was parked near a field and Dad was giving her instructions.
He got out, perhaps he had a premonition. She moved over and stepped
on the gas pedal of the family Essex. It leaped forward veering
directly into a row of freshly planted vine maples before she found
the brake.

She never ever touched a steering wheel again.

Police Blotter Week of 10-15-12

Employing the baby cover
On Oct. 4 a man, his girlfriend and their child entered a supermarket on the 2600 block of California Ave S.W., filled up their cart, and headed for the door (no register visit involved). Two store security guards approached the couple about their lack of payment and things quickly turned physical. The male suspect later told police he lost his cool when one of the guards grabbed his girlfriend (who was holding their baby). At one point the suspect had both security guards in headlocks, but they were able to struggle free, handcuff him, and lead him to their office until police arrived. The suspect was arrested for suspicion of robbery.

Fremont gets new electronic bicycle counter

There’s a fancy new gadget on the Fremont Bridge, and its sole purpose is to count bicyclists.

Last week, the Cascade Bicycle Club and the Seattle Department of Transportation unveiled the new bicycle counter totem, which was installed at the north end of the Fremont Bridge. The totem is more than seven feet tall and has a digital display of the number of bicyclists who cross it during the day. There is also a graphic indicating the number of cyclists since the beginning of the year.

“The location on the Fremont Bridge is ideal because this is the busiest bridge for bike traffic in the city and the state, and there is a good mix of commute and recreational trips through the area,” said Chuck Ayers, executive director of the Cascade Bicycle Club. “We are delighted to help bring a bike counter to Seattle to show that bicycling counts here.

Football: Big evening by Ballard’s Dominique Smith and Michael Asefa not enough; Ballard loses to Issaquah, 49-28

By Christopher Duclos

The boys from Ballard traveled to Issaquah on Friday night to take on the Eagles. Coming off of a two-game winless drought against Skyline and Newport, the beavers were hoping to achieve their second win of the season.

In the first quarter, the Issaquah Eagles carried all the momentum as they scored a pair of unanswered touchdowns. In the second quarter, following another Issaquah score, Ballard showed signs of life as Dominique Smith grabbed a 60-yard pass from senior quarterback Johnny Verduin to put the score up to 21-7. Unfortunately, Issaquah did not let up on their offensive assault, chalking up two more touchdowns to end the first half, 35-7.

The second half proved to be difficult for Ballard. Junior running back Dana Williams took a 90-yard rush to the house in the 3rd quarter. The extra point was then missed by senior kicker Andrew Ingham.

Pinched electrical cord cause of fatal fire, one man dead, another injured

A pinched electrical cord was the cause of a fatal North Seattle fire early Sunday morning, Oct. 14, according to the Seattle Fire Department blog, Fire Line. The fire killed one man and injured another.

Fire Alarm Center dispatchers received a call at 3:32 a.m. reporting a fire in an apartment unit in the 10500 block of Greenwood Ave N. Heavy black smoke was pouring from the bottom floor unit of a two-story apartment complex when fire fighters responded; witnesses said one man may have still been inside.

Heavy black smoke and flames rolled through the apartment. A deceased male was found 10 feet from the entrance. It took crews about half-an-hour to completely extinguish the flames.

A resident who lived above the flaming unit received smoke inhalation and was treated by paramedics.

The damage estimate is $250,000 to the structure and $50,000 damage to contents. The downstairs unit is uninhabitable due to damage, but the upstairs unit is still being determined.
