Reuben's Brews gives Ballard its own beer

By Christopher Duclos

Award-winning home brewers Adam and Grace Robbings, owners of Ballard-based Reuben’s Brews, are at it again with the release of a brand new, delicious flavor of beer. But it’s not just any beer. This beer, called the “Balsch,” is made specifically for Ballard.

The Balsch, which is light, crisp and a tad fruity, adds to an already enjoyable lineup of original home brews that the Robbings’ have been concocting ever since opening Reuben’s in Ballard back in August.

The new Balsch flavor is the result of Robbings experimenting with German brewing traditions. The new flavor boasts the German brewing tradition with a Northwest spin in order to appeal to locals. Reuben's Balsch has more hops than its German counterpart and is unfiltered.

This month, the Ballard community has been waving and hugging goodbye to two long-time workers at the Ballard Boys and Girls Club: Executive Director Mark Hendricks and Childcare Director Kim Brandenburg.

Friday, Oct. 12, the Ballard Boys and Girls Club held the 8th Annual BBQ and Auction Fundraiser. More than a moneymaking event, it was also a tribute and a chance to say goodbye to Hendricks and Brandenburg. The club’s gymnasium was packed with people, including parents, children, long-time workers and old friends as well as new friends. The din of chatter and laughter never quieted down until people took the stage to speak.

SLIDESHOW: Fauntleroy Fall Festival was wet but wonderful

The annual Fauntleroy Fall Festival took place right in the middle of the first really significant rain fall following an 81 day stretch of virtually no rain.

That didn't dampen the spirits of the hundreds who attended, as the parking lot was jammed, and people huddled under tents, used umbrellas and shuttled quickly between the four primary spaces for the event.

Centered in the parking lot of the Fauntleroy Church, YMCA & Schoolhouse and at the Hall at Fauntleroy the event at 9140 California Avenue SW was as always a mix of entertainment, food, animals, crafts and fun.

The festival featured plenty of food, a cake decoration and cakewalk, pumpkin painting, building wooden bird houses, children's crafts, a meditation labyrinth, pony rides, and the presence of a Seattle Fire truck, the Hi Yu Junior Court and more.

Evergreen grinds out important win over Foster

By Tim Clinton

SPORTS EDITOR

Evergreen's 13-0 football win over Foster was important for more than being the Wolverine's first victory of the season.

It also keeps them alive for the postseason.

The win put the Wolverines (1-6) into the third place position among the Class 2A teams in the Seamount League -- and the third place team gets a berth into a "pigtail" playoff to get into the playoffs the Tuesday after the regular season concludes.

"There's a third place pigtail game, and I'm not sure if we're in it," said Evergreen head coach Andy Arena.
Foster fell to fourth place and probably out of the picture with Friday's loss at Highline Memorial, while Lindbergh and Hazen lead the way among the Class 2A Seamount League teams. Kennedy, Highline and Renton are all 3A members. (Tyee does not have a football team and is combined with Mount Rainier in the 4A South Puget Sound League).
