SLIDESHOW: Ray's is back

By Ryan Hueter, UW News Lab

To rebrand a restaurant that has been a Seattle institution for 40 years is no easy task.

To do so while maintaining the operation of a sister café and catering service on the same property would be difficult.

To accomplish all that while renovating a building that sits out over the water on piers would require a daring entrepreneurial spirit.

Well, Ray's Boathouse managed to do all of the above. And starting today, people can see the results for themselves.

Ray’s will celebrate the grand opening of its new dining room Monday, Jan. 28, coinciding with the debut of a new menu. The overhaul of the dining experience is the first major change at Ray’s since the dining room was last renovated in 2001.

RayA view of the dining room

For 40 years, Ray’s has been a Seattle staple and an institution of fine dining. Especially for those who live in Ballard, seeing Ray's neon red sign on the way to Golden Gardens is like saying hi to an old friend.

SLIDESHOW: Rev. David Kratz bid farewell to Fauntleroy UCC Church

By Conrad Wesselhoeft

With bread and grape juice--in insufficient quantities to serve the overflowing crowd--the Rev. David Kratz on Sunday said goodbye to his congregation at Fauntleroy UCC Church, where he has served as senior pastor for 27 years.

The service was the culmination of a weekend of farewells--including a dinner on Friday at Fauntleroy Hall followed by a musical celebration at the church attended by several hundred people.

Among the many gifts Dr. and Mrs. Kratz received from the congregation was a Hawai'ian vacation--with tropical attire to match.

5 shots fired at a West Seattle house but no one was injured

Shortly after 1 pm on Jan. 27, according to Seattle Police, a blue Chevy Blazer (or similar vehicle) drove by a home at 32nd SW and SW Othello in the 7300 block, stopping long enough to fire 5 shots at the residence. The vehicle then left headed south.

A man and woman were home at the time, but were not injured.

According to the police report bullets struck a fence post, a tree branch, the front door and living room window. The bullets that hit the door and window ended up inside the house.

Southwest Precinct officers responded quickly and conducted a search, but did not see or apprehend the suspects. Evidence was collected at the scene, and an investigation is underway.

SLIDESHOW: Life of Seafair Pirate, sailor, friend and free spirit Jerry Ceis celebrated at the Chelan Cafe

For the people who gathered in the Ebb Tide Room at the Chelan Cafe in West Seattle on Sunday Jan. 27 to honor the life of Jerry Ceis, it didn't matter that the room was filled to overflowing.

In fact it was the way they wanted it.

Ceis, who died after an illness on Jan. 9 was a West Seattle original. The son of well known community activist Margaret Ceis and brother of former Deputy Mayor Tim Ceis, Jerry went his own way in life.

That way was often in a boat, he was a very accomplished sailor, and frequently with a drink nearby, as many at the Chelan attested.

Ceis was also a former Seafair Pirate and a large contingent from the Ale and Quail Society, donned in red blazers were on hand to share stories about their friend.

Stories, according to several friends, were a fundamental part of Jerry's life. He had dozens of them, usually outlandish, and always told with humor and sometimes flourishes that were added as they were retold.

Gifts from the Earth dinner raises nearly $185,000 for SSCC

The annual GIFTS FROM THE EARTH dinner Jan. 26 raised nearly $185,000, which is a new record according to South Seattle Community College.

Proceeds from the event will benefit SSCC's Foundation in its mission to provide support for students with scholarships, program equipment, emergency funding, tutoring and more.

“Each year this event just gets better and better,” President Gary Oertli explained. “The funds raised tonight make an immeasurable difference for our students and future students. Words cannot express our gratitude to our generous supporters.”

The dinner featured an all-star line-up of chefs from across the city with help from students from the college's award-winning Culinary Program.

Most of the wine served was produced from a graduate in SSCC's Wine Program, or from current students in the program. Students from the Hospitality Program managed the event from start to finish.

“Tonight, was certainly a night to remember,” Oertli said.

SLIDESHOW: Denny mural celebrates human rights and diversity

Denny International Middle School Principal Jeff Clark had an idea to paint a stairwell at the school in an inspirational way. But that simple suggestion to Assistant Principal Patricia Rangel got a process started that grew into a remarkable celebration of human rights and cultural diversity.

Due to be completed in the next few weeks three murals covering three stories of stairwell now comprise a series of images that include original designs, highly colorful decorative elements but more importantly portraits of people that are historic figures representing the strength of the human spirit.
