Time to Laugh Again

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

Guess you have noticed the seriousness of my writing since I broke my ankle. Living through the six weeks in a cast and then facing the pain of moving my right leg again has been an impetus to return to the comedy stage. Nothing like humor to boost one’s endorphin levels. And do I have lots to joke about now that I can see the light at the end of the tunnel of healing.

S.A.D. gloomy days are still around but I have an antidote—making fun of it all at last. Can’t you just visualize my limping up on stage during the last weeks of my recovery and saying, “Howdy everybody, I’m so glad to be here. I’d be glad to be anywhere at my age.” And if someone tells me to break a leg before I come on stage I can tell them I’ve already done that, right?

Take Two #73: A New Look at Twenty-somethings

By Kyra-lin Hom

Some morning last week, I was driving peaceably along I-5 S when it felt like the bottom dropped out of my car. My smooth, new-tires-for-the-first-time-in-my-life commute suddenly turned into a jarring, jerky ride over massive invisible train tracks. I then vibrated my way over to the shoulder and proceeded to get friendly with AAA.

Turns out a major bearing in my main driveline broke. The main driveline is essentially what connects the engine to your driving tires (everything after the transmission) – it's kind of important. Following that, car part mix ups and whatnot left me Metro bus bound for the next seven days, which gave me plenty of time to read.

UPDATE: Significant copper wire theft shuts down Delridge Playfield

Estimate of loss runs to $20,000; Two weeks required to repair

A "significant wire theft" has been discovered at the Delridge Playfield by the Seattle Parks Department and "we still don’t know exactly how much was taken but is estimated at over 1200’," according to Parks officials.

According to a news release Seattle Parks and Recreation electricians estimate repairs will cost between $15,000 and $20,000, and could take up to two weeks to implement.

“This is a significant theft,” said Acting Parks Superintendent Christopher Williams, “and we want to catch the person or people who did it because this creates a needless expense for taxpayers and an unnecessary loss of playing time for park users.”

The copper wiring was accessed from the junction boxes under light poles around the perimeter of the field. After cutting the wires between each junction box, thieves brought in a vehicle (likely a truck), hooked up the wire to the vehicle and pulled out the wiring. Parks staff believe the theft was conceived and executed over several nights, as it appears other junction boxes with wire still inside were prepared for theft.

Parks crews are out at the site today securing the junction boxes and assessing the damage.

King County Executive Dow Constantine today ordered an inquest into the fatal police shooting of Jack Sun Keewatinawin on February 26, 2013.

The 21-year old was fatally shot after Seattle police responded to calls about a man holding his father hostage with a knife at a home in the 10100 block of Fourth Avenue Northwest. In a confrontation, police said the man brandished a piece of rebar and approached an officer who had slipped on wet ground. Three officers fired, hitting Keewatinawin several times.

King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg recommended the inquest after his office reviewed materials from the Seattle Police Department, which conducted the investigation.

A new brewery in Crown Hill?

Update

Ballard News-Tribune reader Hal directed us to the King County Assessor's parcel viewer (duh, we should've thought of that), revealing that the new microbrewery would be in a 750 sq. ft. two-bedroom house.

Original

We just saw this application on the Liquor Control Board's liquor license application website for a new microbrewery in Crown Hill:

Liquor

With all of the loving that industrial Ballard has been getting, it might be a nice change of pace to have something up north.

If you know anything about this new brewery, email Zachariah Bryan at zachb@robinsonnews.com
