Man fights off medical treatment, threatens police with rifle

If you were in the North part of town this morning, you may have seen Linden Ave N and N 85th St blocked off by police. Well, that was because of a rather combative and possible armed man who simply did not want medical attention.

SPD Blotter has the story:

Seattle Police officers were called to assist Seattle Fire while they were attempting to treat a man earlier this morning in the 700 Block of North 85th Street. As SFD was attempting to evaluate him, he began combative and mentioned a rifle. The man ran further into the house while the firefighters grabbed the unloaded rifle and retreated from the house.

Seattle Police arrived and set up containment around 9:45 this morning. SWAT officers and negotiators arrived and attempted to establish contact with the man. The man eventually came out on his own and was evaluated by Seattle Fire. He was then transported to the hospital for further treatment.

UPDATE - Blue Angels cancel season, Seafair included

Navy also cancels ship visits for Seafair Fleet Weeks

UPDATE 5:30 p.m. April 9

Seafair shared this announcement on April 9. The Navy has cancelled the Blue Angels performance because "of the current Defense policy, which states that outreach events can only be supported with local assets at no cost to the government." Ship visits have also been cancelled. Below are press releases explaining both decisions:

NAVY CANCELS SHIP VISITS AT 2013 PORTLAND ROSE FESTIVAL AND SEATTLE SEAFAIR FLEET WEEKS

The Navy announced on April 9 the cancellation of ship visits during the annual Portland Rose Festival Fleet Week and Seattle Seafair Fleet Week. This step is in addition to the earlier announcement by the Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, to cancel their remaining 2013 performances, including events at Seattle Seafair Fleet Week and in Hillsboro, Ore.

Budget shortfalls due to sequestration are forcing the Navy and other military services to cut back on formal community outreach programs in 2013.

It might get loud: Pile driving at Barton Pump station planned for week of April 15

From King County:

Pile Driving at Barton Pump Station week of April 15
Vibration and noise increases expected

Starting as early as Monday, April 15 crews will remove sheet piles installed during emergency work conducted after a large storm in 2006. These sheet piles need to be removed for crews to perform the pump station upgrades. Once the old sheet piles are removed, new sheet piles will be installed in the southwest corner of the site. During jet grouting activities, crews determined that soils in this corner were incompatible with the jet grout. As such, sheet piles will be driven into two areas of the site to ensure a safe underground work zone. Crews are scheduled to complete pile driving in one area now and will return in a few weeks to complete the second area.

Removal and installation of the piles requires the use of a vibrating hammer, which is expected to increase levels of noise and vibration. In an effort to mitigate these impacts, a portion of the pile locations will be pre-drilled and filled with sand.

Surviving school Sycamore being removed after chainsaw vandalism

A giant Sycamore tree that anchored the northwest corner of Cedarhurst Elementary School in Burien is being removed after vandals severely damaged it with a chainsaw.

Several other Sycamores along the west side of the school had been removed when a new school was built in 2007. Namesake Cedar trees were left on the school’s north side.

But the new school was designed around this survivor Sycamore, which stood guard at the front of the school.

Neighbors said they heard noises Thursday night but the vandalism was not detected until daylight on Friday. A deep cut was made along one side of the tree with a chainsaw.

Highline School District officials decided to have the tree removed for safety reasons. Crews began work on Monday.

A neighbor, who identified herself as a botanist, said the tree, might have remained safe in an isolated area. But she agreed that in a residential neighborhood with homes, utility wires and school children around, removing the tree was prudent.

Cedarhurst has had its share of problems. Some staff and parents said the old building contained mold that caused health concerns.
