Rotary Club's First Friday (April 5) will focus on helping Shelterbox

ROTARY CLUB OF WEST SEATTLE FIRST FRIDAY (press release)

The Rotary Club of West Seattle is known as the fun club. While we have serious meetings and have serious goals to help the community, on the First Friday we meet at a West Seattle watering hole for friendship and libations.

Our club uses the First Friday to not only have a good time but to do good things. We do this by focusing on a non-profit during our first Friday.

This Friday (April 5th) we will be meeting at Feedback Lounge, located at 6451 California Ave SW – The Morgan Junction. This month we are focusing on an International Charity that is also a Rotary International Partner- ShelterBox.

ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families who are affected by disasters, at the time when they need it the most. All the equipment needed for one family to survive for that critical time after a disaster is included in one box, a ShelterBox.

So come out and meet your local Rotary members and our own ShelterBox team.

See you there this Friday 5-7 PM.

Holly Brown: It’s Sustainable Seafood Season Just for the “Halibut!”

Food blogger Holly Brown shares her food writing in the Herald every other week

Editor's Note: This is part of a series of food posts by West Seattle's own Holly Brown whose food blog and WebTV show, The Brown Lounge has gained a national following.

By Holly Brown

Wild-caught Pacific Halibut is a versatile, mild whitefish. Alaska is home to 75% of the halibut caught in the United States. Alaskan Halibut season starts in Mid-March, then kicks into full gear in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia in May. So, it’s the perfect time to get your halibut game on. Try a variety of preparations during Halibut Season and enjoy this delicious and lovely fish.

When you’re choosing Halibut, make sure you’re aware of your eco-choices and select sustainable seafood for your health and the health of our oceans! The Organic Authority reminds us that Pacific Halibut, caught along the West Coast, is an eco-best choice. Atlantic Halibut contains unsafe levels of mercury, (PCBs), and toxic industrial chemicals.

New Westwood, Roxhill and Arbor Heights Neighborhood Council seeks citizen-leaders for special subcommittees

Transportation issues also discussed

By Gwen Davis

The newly-formed Westwood, Roxhill and Arbor Heights Neighborhood council met Tuesday night to discuss community concerns and transit issues with Jim Curtin, W. Seattle resident and Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) employee.

But at the end of the meeting Mat McBride, facilitator, urged the 15 or so participants to become citizen-leaders and volunteer to form special subcommittees for the council.

These subcommittees, which would regard specific interests, would meet independently of the larger group, for one or two hours a month – depending on what the subcommittee decides – and then present their action items to the larger group.

Interests could involve transportation, safety, beautification, schools, economic development or a host of other neighborhood issues.

McBride said it is a powerful and non-demanding or time-consuming way for people to get involved with their city. Subcommittee members only commit to about a year of time.

“Next meeting we’ll leave the room electing people,” he said, as the meeting ended.
