Highline Community College named a “2013 Great Colleges to Work For”

Highline Community College is one of the nation’s best colleges to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education, a top news source for colleges and universities.

The results, released in The Chronicle’s sixth annual report on “The Academic Workplace,” are based on a survey of more than 44,000 employees at 300 colleges and universities. Only 97 of the 300 institutions received “Great Colleges to Work For” status.

Highline was the only two-year school in Washington state to be honored.

“I appreciate that the College’s efforts on diversity and faculty assessment of the teaching environment are worthy of national recognition,” said HCC President, Dr. Jack Bermingham. “Highline truly is committed to student engagement.”

Highline was recognized in two categories, including:
Diversity: The college makes a concerted effort to create a welcoming and fair environment for all employees.
Teaching Environment: Faculty members say the institution recognizes innovative and high-quality teaching.

He’s always been lucky

By Tim Robinson
ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER

(Editor’s Note: Tim Robinson is filling in for Jerry Robinson this week.)

The publisher is busy this week writing his first book, again. It is called "Do as I say, not as I did."
I think he was stung by a bungle bee when he was young.
 I have a list here of his other exploits;

One day he rented a compressor and was painting our house in McMicken Heights. It was a summer day. I was three or four and went outside to sit on the steps to watch him. I had snuck out without any clothes on and was watching, bare bottom, on the warm porch. The spray hose broke and covered me with green paint. I howled. Mom came running out shouting "Why did you paint Timothy green?" He told her it was the only color he had.

Chain-saw swinging man tops police blotter

By Shara Wallace
HIGHLINE TIMES

Man swinging chainsaw
Several people called police to report a man swinging a chainsaw around. Police arrived at the South 13600 Street block and 3rd Avenue South to find a man walking down the middle of the roadway swinging a running chainsaw. Deputies were able to take the man into custody without incident. No injuries were reported. He was booked into SCORE jail for unlawful carrying of a dangerous weapon.

Woman arrested after stealing patrol car
A woman was arrested for allegedly stealing a King County sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car then crashed it. This happened in the area of 1st Avenue South and Southwest 132nd Street in Burien. Deputies were responding to a 911 call of suspicious activity. When deputies arrived a woman jumped into one of the patrol cars and took off. She made it about 30 seconds before crashing it. Then, she tried to flee on foot but was apprehended shortly after. Police did not say what the woman crashed into and no injuries were reported.

When it comes to apartment living, you can't get much greener

Greenfire Campus boasts environmental technology

When it comes to being green, Ballard has just upped its game. The recently opened Greenfire Campus is something of a statement, heralding that Ballard is no longer just a gritty enclave of Scandinavians and fishermen (they're still around) but a gentrified, environmentally-conscious, hip destination.

The campus includes a five-story apartment building with 18 apartment homes and a four-story, 18,000 square foot office building with retail on the ground floor. Thirty-two parking spaces are provided, including a parking space for each residential unit.

Living on the campus is far from affordable housing. The cheapest room, a 510-599 sq. ft. studio loft, costs $1,695-$2,095. A 1,479-1,521 sq. ft. two-bedroom costs $3,995.

But for those with the wallet big enough and the heart of a thoroughbred environmentalist, the Greenfire Campus may be just the right place.

For energy conversation it features geothermal energy, solar power, natural ventilation, passive cooling, daylighting, radiant heat, super insulation and more.

For the green thumb, there are green roofs, community gardens, indoor edible plants, biofiltration and a large tank for rainwater harvesting.
