City proposes new site for North Precinct, further from Ballard

It's no new news that the Seattle Police Department North Precinct Station has been outgrown. The current, 15,000 sq. ft. station was built in 1984 -- long before the booming days of Ballard -- and was meant to house 154 staff.

It's now home to 254 staff.

The proposed station is located at Aurora Ave N and N 130th St and is expected to be approximately 6,000 sq. ft. It would be able to accommodate up to 370 officers and civilian staff (which means room to grow), with on-site multistory parking for patrol cars, visitors and staff. It will also offer a community meeting space and public art. The building is expected to have a useful life of 30 to 50 years.

"Being on the corner of major arterials with good access to I-5, and offering enough space to build a station that will meet our needs for decades to come - this site offers the best location for the Seattle Police Department's north-end operations," said Interim Chief of Police Jim Pugel.

Car Crashes into Parked cars after Occupants Shot

Two men in local hospitals with gunshot wounds

Seatac-- At about 1:12 A.M. on September 19, 2013, the Sheriff’s Office received reports of multiple shots being fired in the 16700 block of 31 AV S, just east of International Blvd. A man in his 30s fled the scene to a nearby bank where he collapsed with at least one gunshot wound. Another person from the same bullet ridden car checked himself into a nearby hospital with at least one gunshot wound.

The car the men were in crashed into several parked cars in an apartment parking lot after they had been shot at. The shooters in this case have not been captured and there are not very clear accounts from witnesses.
The man who fled to the bank was transported to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries. The other passenger in the vehicle was driven privately to Highline hospital after he left the scene prior to deputies arriving.

It is not yet known if the shooting was a random act or the people in the car were specifically targeted.

Fall service changes for Metro coming Sept. 28

Route 22 and Route 120 affected

55 bus routes including 2 in the West Seattle area will be affected by changes coming from Metro on Sept. 28. In a press release on Sept. 18 Metro said, "Streamlined service on Interstate 90, better timed connections and more bus trips in downtown Seattle mark some of the changes to 55 bus routes starting Sept. 28 as King County Metro Transit launches its fall service revisions.

Red timetables and a special orange rider alert will be available in coming days, and riders can go online to preview changes to routes. While Metro’s online trip planner is updated to reflect trips Sept. 28 and after, the online timetables will be changed late on Friday, Sept. 27.

“Ridership continues to grow and these service adjustments are intended to better serve our customers and attract new riders,” Metro Transit General Manager Kevin Desmond said. “However, meeting the growing demand and addressing overcrowded buses isn’t possible in the face of Metro’s funding challenge and the very real prospect of substantial service reductions in fall 2014 after our temporary funding expires.”

Pet of the Week: Mickey is like a tiny wookie

Heather and Paul Fairchild got their dog Mickey, a pure bred Maltese through an EBay classified ad in Spanaway, they said. Mickey is two and they've had him a year.

Mickey came from a home that could not care for him any longer.

"They had a daschund already and they had adopted a few children. Between their work schedules and the children and side jobs they were not able to care for two dogs any longer. Mickey had just sired a litter at that time too, so they said between the puppies and all the dogs he had to go," Heather explained.

That was clearly fortunate for the Fairchilds and they love having him be part of their family. "He's just a fantastic dog, great temperament, and just a good boy," said Heather. "When we are gone he doesn't do anything destructive. What he does, is so cute. We have a couch that borders the front main window and he sits on the back of the couch and waits for us to come home."

When they come home, Mickey has a rather special vocalization. "It's part Wookie (from Star Wars) and part trumpet," said Heather laughing. "It's like he's Chewbacca and he has a tiny trumpet."
