King County Sheriff’s Office targeting multilingual candidates, Peace Corps experience in hiring

information from King County Sheriff

King County Sheriff John Urquhart announced today that the Sheriff’s Office will now list the ability to speak languages other than English and two years of experience serving in a foreign country while in the Peace Corps as “desirable qualities” in its hiring practices. As part of this new initiative, candidates meeting the new criteria will get an extra ten percent boost to their civil service scores, potentially vaulting them ahead of other candidates in the Sheriff’s Office hiring pool.

“A police department can only be successful if it is a mirror of the community,” said Sheriff John Urquhart. “This new policy will help me create a Sheriff’s Office more reflective of the diversity and commitment to service King County has to offer.”

Jerry's View - Lemon or Peach - Only two mistakes in my life

When I was baptized in the Mallory Avenue Christian Church, in Portland, Oregon, it was just a basement with no steeple and a dozen window wells about two feet high with a completely flat roof made of ship-lap.  A wooden staircase led down to the basement with six or seven rooms for meetings. There was a huge stage with a metal baptismal tub where I got dunked-- a choir space 8 feet high for about 30 singers and a pulpit about ten feet in front where Reverend Nankivel gave us words to live by on Sundays.

My little sister Norma went to bible class with me while mom attended a bible study for parents. We were the youngest kids out of the brood of nine but we got to sit with mom during the Sunday sermon.

Bananas and the blues

By Scott Anthony

Maybe it’s the weather, coldness for days on end, or the email from a friend about losing his sweet dog to cancer. On Monday there was the funeral I attended, where the sun broke through just in time to light the tiny Kent cemetery and punctuate the melancholic moments of that service. Or it could be the walk I took the next afternoon through the wrecking yard searching for a truck part, soaked through by returning downpours, those terribly torn up vehicles the result of some awful collision, but altogether, I was feeling pretty down.

I am normally a fairly buoyant guy. So the logical portion of my alleged brain collected those moments to help explain the mild, but overarching depression that had settled over me.

In the pile of mail at home I found a health magazine that offered tips on dealing with depression, and though I had already self-diagnosed by the reasons above, I read the article inside.

Skateboarder smashes car windows, gets run over

From Seattle Police Blotter

A man attacked another man’s vehicle with a skateboard this evening in North Seattle. On Sunday, Oct. 20, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a blue mini-van was traveling southbound on 15th Ave NW and stopped at a traffic signal at NW 80th St.

An adult male pedestrian/skateboarder apparently blocked the path of the mini-van and yelled racial slurs at the driver of the van. The pedestrian then smashed the minivans car hood and shattered the windshield with his skateboard.

During the encounter, the mini-van drove forward and ran over the pedestrian/skateboarder. The Pedestrian/skateboarder became trapped under the mini-van. Bystanders picked up the rear of the mini-van and pulled the pedestrian/skateboarder to safety.

The Seattle Fire Department responded to the scene and medics transported the pedestrian to Harbor Medical Center with serious injuries. The adult male driver of the mini-van was not injured. There were no passengers in the mini-van at the time of the incident.

SLIDESHOW: Sealth runs away with the Huling Bowl trophy; Seahawks win cross neighborhood clash 49-19

By Jeremy Martin

2013 has been a year of rebuilding and of ups and downs for both Chief Sealth and West Seattle High School, as the young teams had combined for only three wins entering Saturday night’s clash between the Seahawks and Wildcats.

The squads showed their youth many times over during the annual Huling Bowl, but the game, played for pride and a trophy was a hard fought, emotion filled affair that saw Sealth prevail 49-19 picking up its second win in a row over the Wildcats.

“We had a good week of practice, that’s the easiest thing to say. West Seattle is young, the future is ahead of them,” Chief Sealth head coach Luther Carr III said.

The future may be in West Seattle’s favor, but this night at least belonged to Chief Sealth.
Leading by just seven points at the half, the Seahawks (3-4) opened the third quarter on a rampage, scoring two touchdowns in only a matter of moments and extending its lead to 27-6 before most Wildcat players could even catch their breath.
