Boy Scout Troop 375 will retire a flag with honor on Veterans Day

Boy Scout Troop 375, chartered by Saint Francis Assisi Catholic Church will hold an American flag retirement ceremony Monday,November 11, Veterans Day, at 4 pm on Alki Beach in West Seattle (across from Dukes restaurant).

They will provide a final color guard to an American flag that requires respectful retirement. Scouts will read statements about the history of our flag, honor attending veterans, play taps, and respectfully incinerate the flag in a proper and affirming manner. The public is welcome to attend. The ceremony will last about 15 minutes.

West Seattle, White Center and Burien families who have old American flags that need respectful retirement, are encouraged to bring their flags to the event and our scouts will collect them, and arrange a second ceremony later this winter to retire the collected flags. Families who bring worn or torn flags are asked to consider contributing $20 to the troop's scout jamboree travel fund, but it is not mandatory.

Brainstorming safety at Roxhill Park and Westwood Village

Roxhill Park in West Seattle has a lot to offer: a new skatepark and top-notch playground, wide open green space with mini-soccer goals for little ones to learn the game, the headwaters of Longfellow Creek and a shining example of plant diversity thanks to the wooded wetland “bog” taking up the east side of the park.

Amongst the positives, however, there are growing public safety concerns at Roxhill and the Westwood Village shopping center just north, due in part to a handful of violent exchanges – from stabbings to beatings – taking place recently and ongoing nuisances including youth and transient drug and alcohol use in the thickets of the bog. Gang tensions have been identified in some incidents and with King County Metro turning Westwood/Roxhill into a transit hub, many citizens say the increase in activity has brought increased crime along with it.

Cuteness Alert: Lion quadruplets turns 1

What's cuter than one lion cub turning 1?

Four lion cubs turning 1.

Today, Woodland Park Zoo's "frisky foursome" turned 1. In celebration, the zoo spoiled the quadruplets with toys, bones and bloodsicles -- "frozen carnivore ice pops" -- in festive birthday boxes.

Nobuhle, Busela, Pelo and Rudo couldn't help but pounce (hah!) on their presents. Their mom, Adia, was also treated.

According to the Zoo, the cubs became an international sensation immediately after their birth and quickly grew a loyral fan base. Visitors came in droves to see the young felines. (This reporter was one of them.)

Sadly, for us anyway, the Zoo's animal management staff is making plans to move the cubs to other zoos in 2014, where they will become part of the Species Survival Plan. This means that they themselves, one day, will birth new cubs of their own.
