Jerry's View: Sledding can be hazardous to your health

Cold winters seemed to be more common in the 50's, where we raised our kids in McMicken Heights. Icy mornings never kept me from hunting Geese near the shallow depression of Bow Lake behind the SeaTac Office Towers on Hiway 99. I recall ice skating on Arbor Lake just east of 1st S. and 122nd St. As an avid sportsman I could hold my own.... except when it came to sledding.

Just up the hill on 172nd street and east to 32nd Avenue S. the hill runs down steeply to Military Road near the old Lewis & Clark Theaters. The chance to take the kids sledding on this perfect incline only required some good sledding snow. We got it in bunches so we waxed up the runners on the Flexible Flyer and headed for the slippery slopes of 32nd Ave S.

As a kid we had snow sleds...or at least we knew kids who did. There were also toboggans. The sleds and toboggans were not all that "steerable", often bumping into people, parked cars or old tree stumps. The Flexible Flyer was advertised as just that... steerable.

Wifespeak

By Scott Anthony

Trying to keep up with our resolution to walk more, last Saturday we loaded up the dogs,Yogi and Zuzu and headed for the nearby woods. In the truck, Mrs. Anthony was more silent than usual, staring out her window. It was sunny and beautiful this afternoon, but still below freezing as we parked along side the road on Weyerhaeuser Way and leashed up the beasties and began along the path.

Normally, we talk about little things like bills that need to be paid, what’s not in the fridge, how the dog’s leg is healing and when we might go on vacation next, but Mrs. A remained mute. When we reached the midway point of our route and she still hadn’t uttered a word, using my highly developed sense of wrath detection honed over 25 years of marriage, I asked her, “Everything ok? You’re awfully quiet.”

Marijuana retailers will now be able to operate within the City of Des Moines.

By Shakira Ericksen

The Des Moines City Council adopted a new ordinance that will allow businesses associated with recreational marijuana production to locate within specific zones of the city.

The ordinance was passed unanimously and with no discussion.

These businesses will be licensed by the State and would become a new source of tax revenue for Des Moines.

Marijuana licenses will not be issued if the proposed business is within 1,000 feet of any; elementary or secondary school, playground, recreation center or facility, child care park, public park, public transit center, library or any game arcade where admission is not restricted to persons aged 21 or older.

The areas where recreational marijuana can be sold will be very limited. The stores would all be regulated and licensed by the State, very similar to a liquor store.

Unmarried and Waiting

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

Looking at the slick and colorful pages of the Time-Life books covering life through the ages it is amazing to see the sumptuous garments and complicated hairdos of women from the fifteenth through the seventeenth century. Granted, those in such wearing apparel were the aristocracy which then made up only a small percentage of the population. There was no middle class as we know it. Women were held to standards of beauty as they are today but the standards were not maintained by tummy tucks and face lifts. The high forehead was achieved by shaving the hair and the pale complexion was achieved by using natural substances known to lighten the skin.

Airport security breach tops police blotter

By Shara Wallace

Man breaks through airport security
A man sits in King County jail after he allegedly bolted through a security checkpoint at Sea-Tac Airport and onto an empty plane. The suspect did not have a plane ticket when he ran through the TSA passenger screening area. The man reportedly made it to Gate D10 and is accused of going through emergency exit doors and onto an airport ramp. He then climbed the stairs to the jetway, broke safety glass on a security door, made it on to an empty American Airlines plane and belted himself in a first class seat. Officers entered the plane and were able to take the suspect into custody after a short struggle. The man, in his late 20ʼs, was likely under the influence of drugs. A judge set bail at $100,000.
