Alternative design concepts for 4755 Fauntleroy Way S.W. Project will be shown

The project aimed at being built at 4755 Fauntleroy Way S.W. to ostensibly be the site of Whole Foods Grocery plus mixed retail and apartment homes has faced hurdles so far on its way to construction. It found its way into the last Mayoral election last July when Mike McGinn denied an alley vacation for the developers based on what he felt were unfair wages paid. The developers, Lennar Multi-Family and Weingarten Realty Investors, responded with a description of the plan and the benefits they say it holds for the community. They also said they "looked forward to a dialogue with the City and our neighbors in West Seattle."

That dialogue will get a new chapter written as the community group known as "Getting it Right for West Seattle" presents two alternative design concepts for the project in a public meeting.

REMINDER: Talk to Metro about the proposed bus cuts; Service reduction meeting set for Dec. 3

Service cuts proposed- Metro must plan now for major service cuts in absence of funding

You have a chance to talk directly to Metro at a public meeting Dec. 3 in West Seattle at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center.

Metro has cut costs, raised fares, and created other efficiencies to preserve most service over the past five years. But temporary funding authority from the state expires in June, and unless action is taken on stable funding, Metro must plan now for drastic service reductions next year.

· 74 routes will be deleted

· 107 routes would be changed

· 33 unchanged routes would likely become more crowded.

More than 80 percent of Metro’s bus and DART routes would be affected. Visit King County Metro website for more information.

Metro has begun a countywide outreach process to let people know about proposed cuts and receive their feedback. Metro plans to send a package of service changes to the County Council for approval next spring. Once approved by the council, the service changes will be phased in beginning in September 2014. The public will also have an opportunity to provide comment to the council before service changes are adopted

Delridge/Highland Park Greenway meeting set coming up Nov. 19

A meeting is set for the Delridge/Highland Park Neighborhood to talk about greenways, alternative routes for bicyclists and pedestrians, away from busy roadways.

Neighborhood greenways provide people of all ages and abilities with comfortable and attractive places to walk, ride a bike, skate and run. They are residential streets where speed and volume traffic calming measures discourage cars from avoiding main streets by cutting through on neighborhood streets: and signs and pavement markings are used to guide people along the route. Local access to homes along neighborhood greenways is always preserved.

Visit the Delridge/Highland Park Neighborhood Greenways home page to learn more.

All Aboard 2nd Hand Furniture closing shop

By Peggy Sturdivant

The big CLOSING sign outside All Aboard 2nd Hand Furniture store at 6500 3rd Ave NW means just what it says. The owners Gretchen Kudla and her husband Anhdi Spath are closing the second hand furniture business this month to concentrate on their original business, Cafe Bambino.

Kudla and Spath purchased the business in 2007; they kept the name of the business which has been family owned since 1971. The antique store has been a viable business but didn't have any takers when put on the market. So Kudla and Spath decided to simply close the store, citing the demands of running two businesses over the last six years. They opened Cafe Bambino in 1997.

They are trying to sell as much as the inventory as possible between now and a proposed closing date of November 24th. After that time they will be open by appointment and items will still be listed and available through Craig's List.

The space will not be vacant; their neighbor Olsen Violins will be taking over the space and to expand their violin repair, restoration and rental program.

Mixed-use building to take spot of Ballard Bartell's

The Ballard Bartell's (22nd Ave NW) will be redeveloped into a mixed-use building, according to Mark Craig, President of Henbart, LLC, the company that owns the property.

“In the past seven years we have watched the neighborhood transform with a new park, library, retail and residential development and we are exploring how our site can add to this vitality and vibrancy," Craig said. "Currently, we are looking at a mixed-use building with residential, commercial and office space.”

According to city documents, the plans state that they are planning to have 78 apartments, four townhouses, 20,000 sq. ft. of office space and 131 underground parking spots. Construction is expected to begin in 2015.

A new Bartell's is opening up on the ground floor of the new Urbana Apartments on the corner of Market and 15th. However, this opening does not necessarily mean the 22nd Bartell's will close, and Henbart, LLC would not confirm whether the Bartell's would stay open in the development or not. They said they are still getting a sense of what the community wants.

A call and an email to Bartell's spokeperson went unanswered.
