Ship fire near Fred Meyer

A fire in a 110 ft fishing trawler was reported at 10:16 a.m. this morning at 653 NW 41st St.

The fire started after the crew were making welding repairs in the galley. The fire quickly spread up through the ceiling and into smaller crawl spaces and wheel house. The crew tried to put out the blaze but could not and evacuated. There were no injuries reported.

Over 20 units and more than 60 personnel arrvived on the scene. There was moderate smoke and fire fighters knocked down the fire in less than 25 minutes. They are now looking for "hotspots" or hidden parts of the fire that could be smoldering.

Kyle Moore, information officer with SFD, said these types of fires are the most dangerous and that's why there were so many units called.

"A fire like this can cause a lot of damage and spread quickly because of how close the ships are. ... The ships are like big steel ovens that get extremely hot and can quickly cause big problems kind of like a forest fire does," said Moore.

SFD will continue to look for hot spots which, according to Moore, can take a long time.

SLIDESHOW: Evergreen/Tyee Staff and Alumni Play Fundraiser Basketball Game

By Kurt Howard

The Tyee high school gym was the place to be for an evening of a family fun sports entertainment. On Friday, November 8, basketball teams made up of current staff and former players from Evergreen and Tyee met for a fun, but very competitive, basketball game. The intent was to help raise money for both of their sports programs.

So where did the idea for this staff/alumni fund raising game originate? Well, from the Tyee girls’ varsity soccer coach, Tricia Halvorson and Evergreen’s boys’ varsity basketball coach, Tony White. Both work at the Matt Griffin YMCA just up the street from Tyee. They presented their idea to athletic directors Mark Cross of Evergreen and John Yellam of Tyee. They both thought it was a great idea and something they wish they had started years earlier.

Metro service cuts impacts will be highlighted at bus stop press conference

Local leaders Joe Fitzgibbon – 34th District State Representative. Tom Rasmussen - Seattle City Councilmember, Joe McDermott– King County Councilmember Amanda Kay Helmick & Members of the West Seattle Transportation Coalition will hold a bus stop press conference Monday Nov. 18 to highlight the need for transportation solutions that prevent massive new traffic congestion in West Seattle.

The event is set to take place just north of the 35th Ave SW & Avalon Way bus stop at 8:30am between The Bridge restaurant and KFC.

With mitigation funds from the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Project going away as well as a budget shortfall for King County Metro – West Seattle neighborhoods will be disproportionately impacted by reduction in bus service. Metro released a preliminary report on what 17% cuts would look like last week.

Cuts will affect eight out of every 10 riders, with more than 70 routes eliminated completely. These transit reductions will place an estimated additional 10,000 cars on our overtaxed West Seattle roadways.
