UPDATE: Fire victim overwhelmed by community generosity; More than $9000 raised

When Eileen and Greg Riddle's home near Roxhill Elementry School burned on Jan. 26 she knew i it was just another burden to bear. Greg, suffering from terminal cancer requires Eileen's care and attention. But the fire that started in the garage as they slept, did not set off the smoke detectors and only the sound of the fire itself woke the family. They barely escaped with what they could throw on to run outside.

When the West Seattle Herald interviewed Eileen later in the day on the 26th, she only knew the Red Cross would help them with temporary housing and that the insurance company would take some time before any kind of return to normal was possible. They had to stay in a hotel for until last week which made caring for Greg more difficult.

Ella the Elephant and positive philosophy

Local author's character will debut on the Disney Channel Feb. 17

By Emile Monte

10 years ago, West Seattle author Carmela D’Amico was not yet the published novelist she aspired to be and the idea of a 400+ page novel was still too daunting a prospect considering her just 20+ years of life experience. She instead became reacquainted with children’s literature as she read to her infant daughter, Olivia, only to find that many of those stories were “fluff”—more entertainment than education. Married at the time to aspiring children’s illustrator, Steven D’Amico, she decided to write the kind of story she’d want her own daughter to read. That meant relatable characters and conflicts, intelligent moral guidance, and a whimsical, magical environment. She used her own childhood fancies and experience as inspiration.

SLIDESHOW: Lady Wildcats beaten by Blanchet 47-37

By Jeremy Martin

Friday night the West Seattle girl’s basketball team hosted Bishop Blanchet for its final home game of the season, better known as Senior Night.

There was just one problem; the Wildcats don’t carry a single senior on its roster, and its youth showed throughout as the older Braves club controlled tempo and hit jump shot after jump shot en route to a 47-37 win on the road.

“They’re (ranked) number two (in the state) right now, we knew this would be a tough game but I’m proud of the way we played during the last quarter,” Wildcats head coach Sonya Elliott said.

Having totaled only 16 points through the first three quarters, the Wildcats turned it on in the fourth putting up 21 points and cutting what was a twenty two point deficit to ten by the final buzzer.

Early on Blanchet used a full court trapping press and fell back into a 1-2-2 zone in the hope of keeping the athletic and strong Wildcats from setting up its half court offense.

The strategy worked as West Seattle was forced into errant passes, contested shots and never seemed to find a groove on the offensive end.

SLIDESHOW: West Seattle loses to Blanchet despite valiant effort

By Jeremy Martin

Friday night’s boy’s basketball clash between West Seattle High and Bishop-Blanchet carried a little extra meaning for all in attendance as the 2014 Senior Night would be the final time that more than half of the Wildcats squad would suit up for a home game.

In the end West Seattle put forth a valiant effort but it wasn’t enough to send out the departing seniors with a win, as the Wildcats were upended 78-48 by the hot shooting braves.

Blanchet big man Matt Welch was more than a handful for the Wildcats doing damage from all over the court, knocking down several three pointers with ease as well as banging downstairs en route to 32 points and 12 rebounds.

Trailing by two points midway through the second quarter, the Braves turned up the juice and nearly closed out the first half on a 12-2 run before an NBA range three pointer from West Seattle’s Malachi Cain hit nothing but net giving the hosts some much needed momentum heading into the final sixteen minutes of play.
