Highline is first in U.S. to provide students with safe 4G access to online curriculum

Starting this fall, students at two Highline Schools will be able to get online to use web-based learning programs anywhere they are, without the need for a standard Wi-Fi connection.

Highline is the first district in the nation to provide students with direct access to school-selected educational programs on mobile devices using a safe 4G connection. Internet access is limited to the selected learning tools, so students do not have unsupervised access to the internet.

The online access is being provided to about 1,000 students at no cost to their families as part of a pilot program at Cascade Middle School in White Center and Midway Elementary in Des Moines. All Midway and Cascade students are receiving HP Chromebooks loaded with online curriculum, including a variety of math and reading programs. Students will be able to log on to use the curriculum and access class assignments over a 4G mobile broadband network.

“With this innovation, we are bridging the digital divide and providing our students with access to the online learning tools they need to be competitive and successful in school and beyond,” said Superintendent Susan Enfield.

I'm no quitter!

By Tim Robinson

If you were 5'1", 97 pounds, and a boy who read comic books before schoolwork, you might understand how I became a late bloomer. In the ninth grade everyone I knew was taller than me. Even the girls. My dad was the same way. He told me but he thought it was because he grew up in the depression in Portland, Oregon and rarely had anything but cold potato soup to eat.

In the back of the comic books and often in publications like Popular Mechanics, there were ads for body building. Charles Atlas offered a course on dynamic tension where you push or pull heavy items or even clasp your own hands together and try to separate them with your fingers intertwined. His ad would show a skinny kid getting sand-kicked in his face by a bully who then stole his girlfriend. The idea was that you did not have to be a weakling.

I didn't have a girlfriend. I blamed it on being weak. The ad worked. I bought it hook, line and sinker. I sent away for the plan and eagerly waited each day by the mailbox, to see what $4.95 would bring.

Highline Saves Money and Staff Time by Going Green

Highline launches paperless flyer distribution system

Burien, WA– Highline is going green by launching a paperless flyer distribution system that not only saves money and staff time, but ensures families receive important information directly in their email inboxes.

Schools distribute flyers about school menus, club activities, after-school enrichment programs, and community events to students on a weekly basis. In the past, staff have had to spend time at the end of the school day distributing paper flyers to students to carry home in their backpacks.

Now families are able to view flyers online. They can subscribe to get email alerts when new flyers are posted.

“This green initiative will save reams of paper and reduce the workload on teachers, office staff, and volunteers,” said Chief Communications Officer Catherine Carbone Rogers. “By going paperless, we are also making sure that this important information goes directly to parents instead of getting lost in the bottom of a backpack.”

Each Highline school has a website where families can see every eFlyer posted. Parents can click on each eFlyer to learn more and sign up for activities immediately. They can also share eFlyers on social media.

Public-private partnership will preserve health services in White Center

Greenbridge Health Clinic is merging with Planned Parenthood office

information from King County

King County Executive Dow Constantine announced a partnership with the City of Seattle and Planned Parenthood to preserve critical health services for women, children, and families in White Center and surrounding areas.

"Through innovative partnerships like this we can keep providing the important health services our clients need, despite cuts to the federal and state funding that supported those services," said Executive Constantine. "I want to thank Mayor Murray and our partners at Planned Parenthood for helping us ensure that children are born healthy and able to reach their full potential."

Due to continual and sharp declines in the federal and state funds that support public health, the Public Health Center at Greenbridge was proposed by the department earlier this summer for closure.

KEEPING TRACK: Thommasen earns weekly award

FOREST GROVE, ORE. – A solid week in the net for Pacific's Leyton Thommasen (Fr., Des Moines) has earned the freshman goalkeeper selection as the Northwest Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week. The award, selected by the conference's sports information directors, was announced Monday night.

Thommasen paced the Pacific defense as they went 1-1-0 last week. In Thursday's 2-0 victory over Oregon Tech, Thommasen earned his first collegiate shutout as he made four saves against eight shots. The freshman saw one ball get past him in the 89th minute of Sunday's loss to the Univ. of Dallas, but also made four saves against nine shots taken by the Crusaders.

"Leyton has been solid thus far this season," said Pacific head men's soccer coach Eric Mild. "The NWC recognition is a just reward for his hard work and performance. We are excited about his future in our program."

With four non-conference matches under his belt, Thommasen leads the NWC with a 0.57 goals against average. In 315 minutes of action, Thommasen has allowed just two goals while making a league-leading 15 saves.

Mount Rainier shut out by Raiders

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

A well-played second half could not make up for a fairly lethargic first half that led to a 3-0 loss in a girls soccer game against the Thomas Jefferson Raiders that opened up South Puget Sound League North Division action at Federal Way Memorial Thursday.

The Raiders opened the SPSL North season with a 1-0 record while the Rams dropped to 0-1 and 1-1-1 overall, having tied Rogers, 0-0, and beat West Seattle, 1-0, in non-league games prior to this game kicking off the regular season.

But this first regular season game against the Raiders is the important one as winning these type league games is what determines making the playoffs, or not, when November arrives.

"It was a slow start," said Rams head coach Michelle Mohn. "We couldn't connect any passes together, a little chaotic. I don't have much else to say about the first half. We were not energetic, no urgency."

The Raiders controlled the game from the beginning, keeping the ball on the Rams' half of the field for the majority of the first half, not to mention keeping possession of the ball a lot of the time.
