SLIDESHOW: Seahawks lose opener, close with their best half of football in years

by Paul Moseley

The Chief Sealth Seahawks opened their 2014 football season with a home game match-up against Notre Dame High School out of Calgary, Aberta Canada. The Seahawks, under the leadership of Coach Simon tonight, took the field on a beautiful late summer afternoon perfect for a season opener.

Chief Sealth came to play and opened the season with a bang. On the opening kick-off, #2 Brady Crane found the lane and returned it over 80 yards for the first score, putting the Hawks up by 6.

Notre Dame found their composure and returned the favor...a few times. They hit Chief Sealth with a blistering running and passing attack, finding the end-zone time after time , and ending the first half with a long pass and TD with 3 seconds to go. At half-time, Notre Dame was up 30-6 and the Seahawks looked like they had been picked apart.

The second half was the best half of football delivered by the Seahawks in the last 3 years.

West Seattle couple burglarized while out climbing

By Tim Clifford

A grim discovery awaited Adam Cox and his fiancé when they returned to their car on Aug.29 at the Hannegan Pass trailhead after hiking on Mount Baker for 5 days. Their vehicle had been broken into, the cables to the battery had been cut and a backpack with their wallets, keys and a cellphone was missing

To make matters even more nightmarish when Cox called Seattle PD to have them check on his residence at the 2600 block of 47 Ave. S.W., they discovered that the thieves had driven the 3 hours from Mount Baker and broken into the couple’s home.

According to witness accounts from various neighbors during the time the couple was away the suspects, a white male in his 20’s and a Middle Eastern (possibly Indian) male, were seen climbing the roof of the home to gain entrance and eventually succeeded in climbing through a window. A neighbor took note of the suspects on the roof (though apparently didn’t call police) and took down the license plate to the vehicle that the suspects arrived in, described as an Astrovan.

Man shot in ankle just a block from the cops

You might think having a police precinct a block away would tend to restrict the use of guns. Not so Wednesday night

The Seattle Police Department said that officers actually heard a shot fired around 11:30 p.m. and subsequently got a report of a gunshot victim in the 7500 block of 24th Avenue Southwest. That's only a block away from the Southwest Precinct on Delridge Way SW and Webster Street SW.

Police were told by a witness that they heard someone knock on their door and opened it to find a 37-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his ankle.

The victim was reportedly uncooperative with officers but was transported to the hospital to be treated for his wound.

Good for you: Catch a tuna

by Kathryn Kingen

Reel down then pull up with all your might, reel down again and pull up until your arms fall off! That is what it was like landing my first tuna. I was with my family bobbing off the tip of the Baja in white-capped seas, some folks down below super seasick and others burning up their biceps in the "fish on" chair. Mom was laughing and squealing with delight as she caught her treacherous tuna, all the while dodging the seagulls flapping over her head. After a long day on the water, docking was a relief and eating the pristine tuna that night was a well-deserved delicious thrill.

Catching a tuna is great fun, and you don't have to go far to do it. We have tuna swimming locally right here in the Northwest, and it's not just a warm-water fish. At Salty's we serve tasty West Coast tuna in September, and by the end of September Washington tuna arrives.
