SLIDESHOW: West Seattle shows spark, but no match for Garfield

by Paul Moseley

It was a sweet homecoming night for the Garfield Bulldogs, and a tough trip downtown for the West Seattle Wildcats in their first league game of the season as the Bulldogs took home a decisive 41-13 victory.

Garfield struck twice in the first half, chalking up 14 points. The Wildcats hung with them through the first two quarters and were close to cutting the lead in half, but an 80 yard TD run by #80 John Ursino was called back for an illegal forward pass, sending West Seattle to the locker room with no points on the board and two TD's down.

In the 2nd half, the Wildcats came out swinging with a 16 play drive that saw 5 first downs on strong running by #44 Gavin Garcia Penor. Wildcat QB Robert Harrleson capped it off by connecting with Receiver Jamie Maples for a 16 yard pass to narrow the gap at 14-6.

Garfield answered on their next two possessions with a 59 yard rush for TD, then a 98 yard drive with another long run of 55 yards and, just like that, it was 27-6.

Emergency drills next week at King County International Airport

information from King County

In late September, emergency responders and aviation officials from south King County will be conducting a series of mass casualty incident (MCI) drills at the King County International Airport.

Because officials are trying to create a realistic response, the media is asked to help us notify the public that this is only a drill. The scenario will be visible from I-5, Airport Way, and Beacon Hill and is a potential visual distraction.

The dates of the drills are Sept. 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26. There will be two drills each day. The sessions run from 9 a.m.–noon and 1:30–4:30 pm. The date open to media is:

Wednesday, Sept. 24
During the 9 a.m. session
8600 Perimeter Road S. Seattle, WA 98108
RSVP required

These practice scenarios help prepare firefighters, police officers, and paramedics for an actual plane crash by creating a realistic environment with a large number of “patients”. While emergency responders deal with patients daily, MCI situations are relatively rare and have different medical protocols. Aircraft or bus crashes and hazardous materials leaks are examples of MCI situations.

Former Vader teacher tells all

by Georgie Bright Kunkel

In the summer of 1938 I applied to teach in the little town of Vader Washington. I ended up teaching a combination first and second grade classroom. What a traumatic time for me setting up housekeeping for the very first time. In that year Vader was only a little spot in the road and not the bedroom community that it is today. I lived in a former so-called mother-in-law apartment attached to a big, older family home near the school. Even though it was called an apartment it consisted only of a large living-dining-kitchen area and a small bathroom which contained the only sink.

My family cooperated in helping me to set up by securing a hotplate for cooking and constructing a kitchen cupboard. The only water available was from the sink in the room with the toilet. I remember that I bought a dishpan from the Vader General Store (run by the head of the school board) so that I could bring water into my makeshift kitchen cupboard to wash dishes in after heating water in my teakettle on my hotplate.
