Aging In Place: Seattle Home Show 2 Launches Nectargy Village, A Home And Health Fair Exclusively For Those Age 50 And Over

Best-selling author Hal Elrod, TV’s Dr. Marion Somers among the headline features

Northwesterners will be able to see all the latest in home and services for those age 50 and above when Seattle Home Show 2, the oldest and largest home show in the country, opens its doors October 3 at CenturyLink Field Event Center for its annual three day run.

Making its debut at the 2014 edition of Seattle Home Show 2 is Nectargy Village, a community of home and health vendors geared towards one of the fastest growing demographics today: people age 50 and over.
The idea of aging in place has been a popular trend among Northwest homeowners for several years, but never more so than in 2014. More than 10,000 people will be turning 65 every day for the next 17 years, making the senior issues and aging in place more timely than ever. By 2050, the number of people over age 65 in the U.S. will have doubled, from 40.2 million today to more than 88 million.

Seattle’s Global March for Elephants and Rhinos to Bring Awareness

Seattle joins over 125 cities worldwide in a march to raise international awareness of the effect that illegal poaching of ivory and horn is having on elephants and rhinos. As a result of increased demand for these illegal body parts, these iconic species are being massacred to the brink of extinction.

This march will also serve to request that each state and the federal government, as well as governments worldwide, publicly destroy their stockpiles of ivory to show zero tolerance for illegal wildlife trading. Advocates for conservation will converge on International Children’s Park in Seattle’s Chinatown for this march.

Holman Road NW Paving Project Nears Completion

The Seattle Department of Transportation will install the last portion of striping for the Holman Road NW Paving Project this weekend. This work will take place between 7 AM and 5 PM on Friday, Oct. 3, with possible additional work on Saturday, Oct. 4, between 8 AM and 5 PM.

During this time, one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction of Holman Road NW between NW 87th Street and 8th Avenue NW. Crews will first close the center lanes of Holman Road and direct traffic to the outer lanes. Once striping is complete in the center lanes, the outer lanes will then be closed for striping and traffic will be directed to the center lanes.
This work is weather dependent. Local bus access will be maintained at 7th Avenue NW for King County Metro’s Route 28 and RapidRide D Line. For information on bus service, look for Rider Alert notices at bus stops, see Metro Online at http://metro.kingcounty.gov/alerts/ or call (206) 553-3000.

After striping is complete, crews will work on remaining electrical and landscape work. The project will be substantially complete by the end of October.

Barton Pump Station September construction update

information from King County

As construction progresses, King County will continue to provide monthly project updates to keep the community informed. King County will notify the community and ferry commuters should any ferry lane closures or work requiring additional notification occur.

Previous work

Work over the past month continued to focus on installation of underground equipment – fuel lines, pipes, ducts, and conduits.

Upcoming activity

Over the next month, you’ll see continued installation of underground equipment. The crew will be connecting the new pieces to each other and to the wiring. The new pump station is expected to be started up and tested this fall. Because of the tight work space, site restoration, landscaping and artwork installation will occur early next year, after the pump station is operational.

What to expect

· Work hours typically 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

· Flagger to move traffic through site and in and out of ferry terminal entrance.

· Heavy equipment on site.
