Kentlake turns over Seattle Christian

By Gerardo Bolong
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

If the repeated term of turnover was attributed to orders of a fruity desert, it would have served the Seattle Christian girls basketball team far better than visiting SPSL 4A Kentlake forcing numerous turnovers in a 48-28 victory on Sat., Jan. 3.

Madelyn Weber's nice inside basket followed by a Carlee Ronish to Kelli Ronish goal and a running Kelli Ronish bank shot fired the Lady Warriors into 12-9 lead after one quarter.

Kylee Johnson gunned in a Kentlake 3-pointer as part of her seven-point quarter as the Falcons flew away to an 18-12 lead.

Forcing bad SCS passes and other turnovers, Kentlake also forced Seattle Christian to drain time after crossing half court, resulting in less time to run the half court offense.

Leading 25-16 at the half, KHS kept up the pressure to billow its lead into high double figures that eventually reached 20 points on three occasions which occurred even while the Lady Falcons used their entire roster.

Pirates' get a champ, and, Kennedy competes well at tourney

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Of the 14 weight classes, the Highline Pirates put three guys -- Zach Edson, Jimmy Matta and Justin Herbruger-- into the finals and one came out on top. That was Edson at 120 pounds, while the Kennedy Catholic Lancers' Jacob Dailey, Ben Josie and Sebastian Ferraro all made semifinals at the 15-team Franklin Pierce Cardinal Classic wrestling tournament Saturday.

Pirates' coach Casey Rice liked what he saw from some of his wrestlers, and from others he knows they can deliver more on the mat.

"Always ups and downs, the effort was there," said Rice.

The best wrestle of the night came from champ Edson, who took on Mercer Island's Taylor Yuasa in the 120-pound final. It was a match-up of the sixth and eighth place wrestlers from last season's Mat Classic state meet at the Tacoma Dome in mid February. And Yuasa was in the running for third at state, too, but settled for sixth because of an injury default prior to the consolation 3rd-6th place match.

SCS girls basketball vs Auburn

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

The Seattle Christian Schools girls basketball team continues to hold a firm grip on success this season, staying undefeated. The 1A Warriors beat the visiting SPSL 3A Auburn Trjojans, 43-26, in a non-league matchup on Tuesday.

SCS improved to 8-0, overall, all non-league wins, with the first regular season game not until mid-January. The Trjojans dropped to 2-6, overall.

"Maddie had 17, that's nice," said Warriors coach Dave Jansen. "Sydney DeWitt only had nine for them. We did a good job on her."

Jansen was looking at the scorebook after the game and smiling. He liked the fact that senior captain Madelyn Weber scored 17 points which, incidentally, led all scorers. He, also, noted that the Trjojans' leading scorer, DeWitt, who came into the game averaging second most in the SPSL 3A seven-team, league, scoring 15.1 points per game, could only net nine against the Warriors' good team defense.

Ballard Crime Watch: Bongs and family pearls taken

Two bongs went up in smoke

On Dec.20, Seattle Police officers responded to a burglary at a head shop located on the 8000 block of 15th Avenue Northwest. The owner told officers that he arrived that morning and found a large chunk of concrete had been hurled through a front window. Police were surprised because the store resides on a busy arterial street, and the suspect took a big risk bashing out a front window. The fiend was desperate and took two large bongs from the display case. The owner could not confirm if there were other items taken. Police dusted for fingerprints but found none.

Never trust a skinny chef!

by Chef Jeremy McLachlan

Let's not mince words. Never trust a skinny chef! I know I'm overweight like many chefs — we love to cook and we're constantly tasting what we cook. We even eat our mistakes! How else would we know we've made an error? We're also a bit stressed — imagine cooking hundreds of meals and then going home and cooking more! This is one of the many reasons I love my wife. She cooks too! She makes a wonderful soup that's perfect for trimming some pounds after the holidays.

As my fellow blogger and Salty's Co-Owner Kathy Kingen says in her January blog on Soup Philosophy, "It's comforting and colorful, it cheers a chill and warms the heart, its the perfect comfort food."

Soup Philosophy: Save your bones!

by Kathryn Kingen

What's the matter, Buddy? You say you're tired of holiday stuffing and eating? You say your Christmas outfit is pinching you around the middle, because it's the size you wore last year? You say you've run out of Kleenex because one of the presents you received was a crumby cold bug? Is that what's troubling you, Friend? Well lift your head up, grab a bowl and spoon and show the world, "You'll never give up that ship!" (words of an old philosopher, Eddie Lawrence).
