Zoo evaluating its Board of Directors’ meeting practices

Woodland Park Zoo Board of Directors is extending its public comment period at its Jan. 27 board meeting while it reviews its practices to accommodate more members of the community. The relocation of the zoo’s elephants is not on the agenda for the board meeting.

Per the zoo’s existing policy, an agenda for each board meeting is posted on the zoo’s website one week prior to each meeting at http://zoo.org/about/board.

“During our Board of Directors’ meeting in December, we experienced greater community interest for our public comment period than ever before. The board officers and Governance Committee are closely evaluating our practices and learning how we can better accommodate a larger group of community members, as well as media requests, at future meetings,” said Laurie Stewart, Chair of Woodland Park Zoo Board of Directors.

Will the LIHI hygiene center in Ballard ever open?

Appeal hearing for Ballard Urban Rest Stop scheduled for February 10

The appeal hearing for the proposed Ballard Urban Rest Stop has been set for February 10 at 9 am in Room 4000 of the Seattle Municipal Tower (700 Fifth Ave.).

The hygiene center is planned to occupy the ground floor of the Low Income Housing Institute's (LIHI) Cheryl Chow Court located at 2014 NW 57TH St.

The Cheryl Chow Court has 51 units and provides affordable housing for the elderly. They recently started leasing. Managers of the building reported that they are having no trouble filling the leases, despite the contention surrounding the URS. Eligible seniors need to be age 62 or older with annual earnings 50 percent or below the area’s median income ($78,500). 10 percent of the housing is reserved for homeless seniors.

The meeting is the result of legal action filed by neighbors that say the URS is a “bad fit” and should not be established.

Reasons for the appeal include issues concerning noise, the scale of the project, inadequate laundry venting, public health and safety and lack of an adequate transportation plan – to name a few.

“Simple, Good, Undecorated Things”— Modern Finnish Design Heads to the Nordic Heritage Museum

The Nordic Heritage Museum presents Finland: Designed Environments March 12 to July 26, 2015

In a 1957 speech in London, celebrated Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto said, “We should work for simple, good, undecorated things, but things which are in harmony with the human being and organically suited to the little man in the street." Aalto’s designs and the other examples of Finnish design are celebrated as much for their humanist philosophy as their clean, modern style in Finland: Designed Environments. Finnish design stands apart from other design sensibilities not just because the objects are beautiful, but because through their enduring, efficient work, Finnish designers encourage thoughtful consumerism in a wasteful world.

“After the success of last summer’s exhibition on Danish Modern furniture, we are pleased to continue the conversation about the value of excellent design here at the Nordic Heritage Museum,” said CEO Eric Nelson, “Seattle is a city full of creative talent and new industries that thrive on good design, and so we are particularly excited to bring this exhibition to Seattle.”

SLIDESHOW: Seattle Christian presses by Auburn Adventist

BY GERARDO BOLONG
Contributing Writer

Nisqually 1A Seattle Christian commanded the court early before progressing to a 38-20 girls basketball home win against Auburn Adventist of the SeaTac 1B League on Sat., Jan. 17.

"We're happy to win and working to get healthier," said Warrior head coach Dave Jansen.

As the SCS man-to-man defense coerced court turnovers from its opponent of the night, point guard Kelli Ronish touched off a 13-0 points rampage with a standard 3-point play.

Also featured in the essentially game-deciding charge were a Taelor Willhoite free throw, Abby Louie's 3-point bomb, two consecutive Madelyn Weber driving baskets and Jessa Henry's rebound basket.

When the game appeared to be securely in hand after big leads that reached an apex of 23 points midway through the third quarter, the Warriors regularly sent out a potpourri of personnel to the court and kept the lead in the high teens while the squads fought scrappily, if not stylishly, to the end of the game.
