SLIDESHOW: Foster won when it counted, and, goes to districts in girls b-ball

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Foster won when it mattered.

The Bulldogs won their first game against Highline, 19-17, and despite a loss to host, Lindbergh, 22-11, in the second game of a three-team Seamount League 2A playoff elimination format will still go on to the West Central District tournament.

The two games were played on Friday at the Renton Highlands area school and the low scores are because the games were shortened to two eight-minute halves instead of the usual four eight minute quarters of a regular season high school game.

Highline, Lindbergh and Foster tied for third place in the Seamount for 2A teams in the league that includes Kennedy and Hazen, who are 3A squads and don't count. Renton went as the first place team (third in the Seamount) and Evergreen was second. So, after this mini playoff, Linbergh goes as the third seed and Foster the fourth. Highline is, unfortunately, out.

Foster will play at Liberty High School in the East Renton Highlands on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. for its opening round district game.

SLIDESHOW: Evergreen vs. Kennedy

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Kennedy Catholic and Evergreen played just about even the first four minutes of the first quarter, 7-6, Lancers leading, but from there JFK went on a 10-0 run to end that frame en route to a 56-25 win in the Wolverines' gym Wednesday.

The Seamount first-place team, the Lancers (12-0, league, 15-4, overall) will host Columbia River or Kelso for a district game at 7 p.m. next Wednesday while the third-place Wolverines (9-3, 12-7) will entertain Sequim.

"They gave it a lot of heart," said Wolverines' coach Natasha Hicks McCray of her team, playing without its usual complement of players.

Kennedy led, 17-6, after the first quarter, and after that big 10-0 run to end the first continued that way of play with an outscoring of the Wolverines, 16-6, in the second quarter, to lead, 33-12, going into halftime. And, that score only worsened after that for the Wolverines.

Lancers' coach, Greg Caldwell liked his team's effort.

Confused about the State Basketball Tournament? Me too

by Paul Moseley

For us west side sports fans, parents and athletes, Basketball tournament season is exciting. Actually, it's exciting and exhausting if you want to figure out who's playing in what tournament and how it all ties together on March 7th in the Tacoma Dome for the State Championship.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the way it's done here in Washington but as a former physics major drop-out turned management major, I am under-qualified to grasp all of the tournament details. Welcome to the Metro/Sea King District 2/WIAA basketball tournament.
