Discover Burien

Discover, Celebrate, Support

By Andrea Reay, Executive Director, Discover Burien

As the Executive Director of Discover Burien, it is my honor and privilege to help support Burien businesses and non-profit organizations. I recently had the opportunity to tour Children’s Therapy Center’s Burien location, at 127 SW 156th St in Burien.

Children’s Therapy Center maximizes the potential of children with special needs. They are the largest and most comprehensive nonprofit pediatric therapy program in Washington State. Since 1979, they have provided essential services and products for children age birth to 18 including physical and speech therapy, early intervention services, and orthotics and equipment. In partnership with parents and caregivers, they celebrate where each child is today and work toward who they can become.

Early intervention is key to maximizing every child’s potential. Over 30% of the children that receive services starting at birth will not even require special education once they enter public school, because of the therapy and services provided at Children’s Therapy center.

Georgie's View: why not share the earth with everyone?

by Georgie Bright Kunkel

Our profit making society has evidently run out of ways to make profits so more ways must be created. It used to be that businesses were created to meet a need but now business creates needs and society is enticed to turn to the corporation to meet this created need. An example of how corporations entice us, the buying public, into buying more is seen on every TV channel. You’ve probably seen the TV ad showing an artist with tool in hand trimming fat off the clay figure of a woman. People are of all sizes and shapes but the corporation is still trying to convince each woman that her particular body type is not acceptable.

LETTER: Don't leave Tukwila to the pros

To the Editor:

In the city of Tukwila, there are three city council seats and one mayor’s positions expiring at the end of this year. Council Members Robertson, Kruller, and Hoggardy currently occupy the Council seats. Mayor Haggarton’s term is expiring. You may contact Tukwila City Hall or King County Elections for more information: http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections/candidatefiling.aspx http://www.tukwilawa.gov/

Because of the poor economy, it is imperative that we elect people dedicated to bringing service-costs within our ability to pay for them. Currently, the City of Tukwila is raising fees and taxes that fall most heavily on those of us in our community least able to pay for them. Answer this question; is the amount of spending more this year than last year? Filing dates are: Consult the earlier listed links to King County Elections and Tukwila. In lieu of sufficient funds to pay the filing fee, you may submit a filing fee petition.
