Doug Dixon accrues cache of symbols from Ballard’s past

There’s no doubt Ballard is undergoing unprecedented change. Large apartment buildings are being erected and new architecture is changing the face of Old Ballard. Businesses are opening and closing, and with them gone are the signs and iconic things that once told people they were in an old maritime village.

Many of those symbols of the past are being taken down, however, they haven’t left Ballard.

John “Doug” Dixon, general manager of Pacific Fishermen Shipyard, has been collecting the signs and furnishings of businesses in Ballard as they close for years.

Where does he put them? In the shipyard, of course.

Northwest CrossFit opening fourth community gym April 27

At Interbay Urban Center next to Whole Foods/Petco

Northwest CrossFit (NWCF), Seattle’s largest CrossFit conglomerate, is set to open its fourth location this month at the Interbay Urban Center with the first day of business slated for April 27th. With gyms in GreenLake, Ballard and Bellevue, NWCF’s newest location represents its most modern, full spectrum workout facility to date.

With a new branding campaign underway, Northwest CrossFit owner Jake Platt is committed to bringing in new clientele by demonstrating the core of his business and the NWCF family. The new tagline “Redefine Your Fitness” promises to offer more than just a gym, NWCF offers a community. Upon entering the new 5,000 square foot gym, visitors are greeted by a floor to ceiling welcome wall with the words “We are NWCF.” The “we” in the new campaign represents that very community, one that comes together to get fit and train hard. In the process, they encounter a new level of support, resilience and camaraderie that Platt feels they cannot obtain in a regular gym.

Chief Sealth jumped out to a 9-0 lead and then coasted to a 15-5 victory over Ingraham in Metro League girls fastpitch softball action Monday.

The Seahawks ran their record to 8-5 with the win in a game that was stopped in the midst of a bottom of the sixth rally by a 10-run rule.
"These girls work hard at their sport," said Chief Sealth head coach Mike Depew after the dust on the Southwest Athletic Complex field had settled.

Julia Stewart won on the mound for the Seahawks, throwing the first three innings and striking out five as the team built its 9-0 lead.
Stewart allowed only one base runner -- on a leadoff single to start off the top of the first -- and she was quickly erased to allow Stewart to face the minimum nine batters.
Melanie Ochoa threw the final three innings, striking out three.

Livvy Boyd led the Chief Sealth hitters on what was a sunny and mildly breezy afternoon, hitting 3-for-4 with a triple and two singles. Sister Sophia Boyd hit 2-for-3 in the leadoff position on a triple and a double.

Seattle Christian sweeps

Courtesy article by Gerardo Bolong

For Seattle Christian, it was more fun in the sun under blue skies.

Sophomore Carlee Ronish crafted a four-hitter with 10 strike outs and only one walk as the Seattle Christian softball team completed a sweep of three games for the week in a 9-1 nonleague 1A victory at Klahowya (Silverdale) on Fri., April 17.

The visiting Warriors systematically took control of the event, beginning with a three-run first inning. Klahowya's Eagles soared briefly to put together enough offense to score their only run of the game in the home half of the first.

Seattle Christian earned runners on base in the second inning on the way to another three-spot run production and a 6-1 lead.

As their defense held tough, the Warriors notched two additional runs in the fourth inning plus a lone counter in the sixth inning.

Highline High School graduate Ryan Brett was set to make his Major League Baseball starting debut Tuesday night as the second baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Brett and the Rays are hosting the Boston Red Sox this week, after he made his first plate appearances at home against the New York Yankees this past weekend.

"He's a prospect for the Majors starting at second base," said Brett's agent, Nik Lubisich of the Northwest Sports Management Group. "It's a big accomplishment."

Brett flew out to left in his first at-bat in the Majors against the Yankees, then walked his second trip to the plate.

Brett then doubled off the wall for a double in his third plate appearance, giving him a .500 average (1-for-2) going into Wednesday's first start against the Red Sox.

"His parents and myself went down to Tampa for the debut over the weekend," Lubisich said. "So it's a big deal for the family."

Brett has been with Lubisich and his Northwest Sports Management Group since he signed with the Rays in 2010, which was also the year the business.
