Pacific Middle School Honored for Innovative Suspension Alternatives

Video shows innovative in-school suspension program from a student’s perspective

Burien, WA– Pacific Middle School is being recognized for its innovative work to provide alternatives to suspension that keep students in school and learning.

Uniting for Youth named Pacific Academy, Pacific’s in-school suspension (ISS) program, the winner of the 2015 Uniting for Youth Innovations in Alternatives to Suspensions Award. The award was developed to recognize creative partnerships that aim to eliminate discipline practices that rob students of class time, causing them to fall behind.

“Pacific Academy stands out based on outcomes, innovations in providing wrap-around and follow-up services, and the strong letters of support,” said Marcus Stubblefield, Uniting for Youth coordinator. “It is programs such as these that will help strengthen the school-to-career pipeline.”

In the graduating class of 2014, Highline students with zero out-of-school suspensions had a graduation rate of 71 percent, while students with just one out-of-school suspension had a graduation rate of only 46 percent.

One of Highline's strategic goals is to eliminate out-of-school suspensions, except when critical for student and staff safety.

New Business

by Michele Smith

Smarty Pants
Michelle Braasch and Tim Ptak, owners of Smarty Pants restaurant and bar in Georgetown and the restaurant Hudson on E. Marginal Way are busy remodeling the space behind the Grand Central Bakery to bring a new version of Smarty Pants to Burien. While Georgetown decor is dedicated to motorbikes, the new Burien location will feature a theme based on classic cars, hot rods and car shows. Hoping to open by the end of June, 2015, Smarty Pants will offer scratch made grilled sandwiches, homemade soups and chilis and brunch on the weekends. The retro-style bar will offer craft cocktails, local craft beer and wine, happy hour daily and is family friendly.

When I stopped by Tuesday, they were in the process of creating what will surely be the sunniest outdoor patio in Burien! Look for them to open in late Juneat 626 SW 152nd St.

You Are What You Eat: Taking the parsley challenge

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD
Nutrition and fitness manager, Northwest Kidney Centers

Spring is here! With all the green growth happening, it’s time to stop using dried herbs and concentrate on fresh ones! Fresh herbs have a brightness and fragrance that are lacking in dried herbs because drying evaporates oils that give herbs their flavor.

If you haven’t used fresh herbs before, I have a challenge for you! Buy one bunch of fresh parsley. Buy the flat-leaf kind, it is much more flavorful than the curled-leaf type. Cut off the bottom half-inch of the stems, remove the wire holding the bunch together and put the bouquet in a cup of water on your kitchen counter.
