SLIDESHOW: Rams struggle, early, against Spanaway Lake, in district soccer playoff, but, not, late, to make state

By Ed Shepherd
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

It was one of the more incredible comebacks one will ever see in the game of soccer.

Mount Rainier trailed, 1-0, as Spanaway Lake scored a goal with 10 minutes to play in the game Thursday, but the Rams came back with two scores in the final six minutes for a rousing state-qualifying 2-1 win over the Sentinels in a WIAA District 3 4A playoff at Curtis High School.

"Don't see it too often," said Rams coach Steve Mohn, asked to recall any ending like that in his soccer days. "One of the better games I've been in, as a player or a coach."

Mohn's seen a lot of soccer action, too, as a player, having played on the University of W ashington men's soccer team, helping them get to the second round of the NCAA college tournament his junior and senior seasons. And Mohn's also the coach of the Highline Community College men's soccer team now.

The Rams won the South Puget Sound League Northwest Division with an 8-4-1 record and won eight of their last nine. And the one non-win wasn't a loss but a tie.

Zoopa Organics permanently closes its doors in Tukwila

By Tim Clifford

Sad news arrived in the form of “permanently closed” signs adorning the windows of Zoopa Organics in Tukwila earlier this week. The restaurant, located at 393 Strander Blvd. across from the Westfield Southcenter Mall, was one of the first, and still one of the few, all-you-can-eat buffets to offer mostly organic ingredients.

“In the 18 months since we took over Zoopa we have made significant progress and learned more than we knew we needed to. But, the landlord has other plans. Restaurants are a risk for landlords and one they are not willing to shoulder given the looming threat of forced wage increases which render restaurants unprofitable,” wrote the owners on their website, eatzoopa.com, of the closing.

According to the owners the closing was unexpected and the decision by the landlord came last weekend.

The beekeepers of Boulevard Park

Boulevard Park Place, a seniors community just off Military Rd S. above the Duwamish River at 125th S., is a place for bees too. Several residents got a bee in their bonnets to raise the busy creatures, importing them from far away Oregon and as near as Ballard.

The life of a honey bee is short and sweet (pun intended). Foraging up to five miles in a variety of directions, the girl bees do all the pollen searching while the boy bees stay behind to mate with the Queen while the drone bees build honeycombs for the fertilized eggs laid by, guess who,... the Queen.

Ron Steinman, general manager at the senior community, is also the head beekeeper. Ron entrusted Nancy Whitehair and Karen Hanley to assist several others including Betty Michaelsen, Elsie Fetzer, Kathleen Gosser, Kim Michaelsen, Mel Topf, Nedra Topf, Sandy Howard and Shirley Sibley.

Together the group makes sure the hive is taken care of with plenty of sugar water and bee food that looks a bit like peanut butter. The bees love it, according to Karen Hanley.
