Are You #GoodandReady for disaster, Seattle?

Nonprofits Join Forces to Provide Free Disaster Preparedness Kits, Raise Awareness of Disaster Prep at Fremont Fair this Saturday

Residents are invited to build a free disaster preparedness starter kit, as well as learn other ways to keep themselves and their families safe in a disaster, at the Fremont Fair this Saturday, June 20.

Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, and The Allstate Foundation have launched a nationwide, 14-city tour to help Americans get ‘good and ready’ for a disaster. This is the annual tour’s first time in Seattle, where local volunteer organization Seattle Works will be on-hand to help residents get prepared.

In the last 10 years, nearly 255 million people worldwide were affected by disasters and since 1980, weather-related disasters have increased by more than 230 percent.

“Disaster prep is essential, especially for people in the Puget Sound region,” says Jessica Frederick, development and communications manager at Seattle Works. “Experts have long predicted a large-scale Seattle earthquake and unfortunately, the risk of another landslide like the tragedy in Oso makes this issue very real for our community. A preparedness kit is a proactive way to make sure you have supplies on hand if a disaster occurs.”

Peggy Sturdivant recognized for excellence in journalism

The Western Washington Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has awarded Ballard writer, Peggy Sturdivant, the second place honor for excellence in journalism for a column in a weekly paper.

For over 20 years the SPJ has awarded writers of the region for great work in journalism. The annual gala was held last Saturday, June 13, at the Seattle Renaissance Hotel.

“It’s great and an honor, and with a various number of my students getting awards and prizes, I will finally have something to share with them,” said Sturdivant.

Unfortunately, Peggy was visiting family on the East Coast the night of the gala and could not attend.

“I wish I could be there because it’s a lonely business. … It would have been really nice to be in a room with fellow journalists for a night.”

Peggy has been writing for the Ballard News-Tribune for almost seven years, but started publishing work online for a blog associated with the Seattle PI back in 2007. Soon she thought that writing about her community in a Ballard newspaper would be more fulfilling. Today Peggy’s column appears every week in the Ballard News-Tribune.
