27th annual Fishermen’s Fall Festival set for October 3

The 27th annual Fishermen’s Fall Festival is a FREE event celebrating the return of the North Pacific fishing fleet to Fishermen's Terminal on October 3.

The Festival increases the public’s knowledge of the importance of the fishing industry as well as Fishermen’s Terminal to Seattle while raising money for the Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial Foundation. This is an all-volunteer event that depends on over 200 volunteers for its success.

The Festival provides families with a fun and educational outing on the waterfront as well as an opportunity to learn more about seafood. Hands-on art projects with fishing themes, including the popular wooden boat building and trout pond, are complimentary for all children and admission to the festival is free. Proceeds from the activities within the Festival are donated to the Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial to assist families of fishers lost at sea.

The Fishermen’s Fall Festival is a truly unique Seattle event! For more information, www.fishermensfallfestival.org.

You Are What You Eat: Plum crazy

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD

As summer winds down, plum trees start to discard their fruits. There usually are so many it’s hard to eat them all at once. Over the years I have collected some favorite recipes for using up copious quantities of plums.

Plums are high in antioxidants, vitamin C and potassium. They’re great as snacks, or sliced and added to late summer salads with goat cheese and nuts. My favorite homemade flavored vinegar is infused with plums. Just slice about 2 cups and put them in a gallon jug of white or cider vinegar. Let sit two weeks, strain, and you will have a rosy, flavorful vinegar to serve over your plum salad.

Or use some fruit to make spiced plum jam. During the dark days of winter you can spread a little summer onto your toast or a scone.

If you don’t have time to use your plums now, freeze them until you’re ready. Cut them in half, remove the pit, place in zip-close bags and freeze. I usually store four cups of plums per bag, which is just right for a batch of jam. It’s also the perfect amount of fruit to make my favorite dessert, plum marzipan pie.

Rangers happy to have Sealth grad Keone Kela on board

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Keone Kela finds himself playing a key role in the thick of a pennant race, and the Texas Rangers are more than happy to have him along for the ride.

"He's a good pitcher," said Texas manager Jeff Banister. "We like having him, and he's done a solid job for us."
Kela is in his rookie season as a relief pitcher out of Chief Sealth High School in West Seattle and Everett Community College. He mostly comes in for the eighth inning when the Rangers are ahead.

He has come through more often than not -- with 18 holds, one save and a 6-5 won-loss record.
Kela is cruising along with a 2.62 earned run average, and has 61 strikeouts in 54 innings of work over 61 games.
His latest success came in the eighth inning of Tuesday's 9-6 win over the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.
The 6-foot, 1-inch 190-pound right hander set the Mariners down 1-2-3 on a strikeout, a ground out, and another strikeout to earn a hold.

First day of school sees the Superintendent visit Sealth

Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Larry Nyland paid a visit to Chief Sealth High School on the strike delayed first day of school Sept. 17.

He spoke briefly, greeting the 320 incoming freshmen to the school, after a run through a gauntlet and orientation session provided by Link Crew, juniors and seniors.

Nyland dodged reporters questions about the school strike which brought teachers and staff back to Seattle Schools but has yet to be ratified by the membership. That vote will take place on Sunday.

Microsoft CEO Announces $75 Million for Computer Science education expansion

West Seattle and Sealth High Schools will benefit from TEALS program

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced on Sept. 16 a new commitment of $75 million in community investments over the next three years to increase access to computer science (CS) education for all youth, and especially for those from under-represented backgrounds.

This new investment has a significant impact in Washington State, particularly in West Seattle:
· As part of this investment, Microsoft will expand its Technology Education and Literacy in Schools (TEALS) program to 11 new schools in Washington state this fall, including Chief Sealth High School and West Seattle High School. This brings Washington’s number of TEALS schools to 57, up from 46 last school year.

· The program’s local growth is part of Microsoft’s nationwide expansion of TEALS. The U.S. program, which started in 2009, aims to grow five-fold over the next three years, with the goal of working with 2,000 tech industry volunteers to reach 30,000 students in nearly 700 schools across 33 states.

Delridge P-Patch needs volunteers to help with sorting soil

A big load of soil at the Delridge P-Patch at 5078 25th Ave SW needs help. More accurately the people at the P-Patch really need volunteers to come and help filter out the rocks in soil that was donated to the garden, thanks to gardener Diane Brooks.

It's a bunch of soil, under tarps (thankfully) that is intended to be put into raised beds for DESC who maintain transitional homeless housing on Delridge Way SW.

Site Coordinator Ta Granados said, "They are intending it to be a therapeutic program for the residents," meaning people would come and plant and grow things as a way to feel good about themselves and have a positive activity.

There's a deadline to get the work done by Sept. 30 and you can sign up to help on the http://delridgeppatch.org/calendar/ for one of the scheduled work parties.

Will the Edith Macefield house be saved?

On August 5, the owners of Edith Macefield's famous "Up House"announced the house would be donated to OPAL ("Of People And Land") Community Land Trust -- a nonprofit organization providing permanently affordable housing on Orcas Island -- if sufficient funds could be raised to help offset the costs of moving, renovating the home and purchasing land on the island.

Following the announcement, OPAL launched a Kickstarter campaign.

To date, backers of the online Kickstarter campaign have pledged about 10 percent of the funds needed to save the house and move it to a new location. As much as people love Edith's house, these pledges are not sufficient to save the house. To move the house and create a home for a family in need, OPAL needs to identify additional funding sources.

The fundraising campaign to save Edith's house is in a second phase to secure addition major gifts by the end of September. OPAL has been working offline to build major donor support in addition to the funds generously pledged online by the 180 Kickstarter backers. One anonymous donor pledged a $50,000 challenge donation-- if $100,000 is raised from other sources.
