UPDATE: Fire at High Point Management center started outside; Declared an arson

Police say recent string of fires is likely the work of the same person

UPDATE 3:30pm
A fire that was declared an arson at the High Point Management Center in the 6500 block of 35th SW, flared up in the roof drawing fire crews to the scene again shortly after 2pm. Fire crews arrived to find the roof smoking and quickly got ladder trucks deployed so holes could be cut in the roof to access what was burning.

Southwest Precinct Commander Pierre Davis said they believe this fire was the work of the same individual who has been setting fires for more than a week in West Seattle starting with some boxes, then a dumpster fire, then two cars near High Point, and now this building. This pattern of escalation is not common but it does happen Captain Davis said. He said the fires were all set between 1am and 4 am in the morning.

Arson investigators were on the scene and attempting to determine what was used to start the first fire. Capt. Davis said they were "stepping up our awareness" with a full array of investigative and enforcement tools being brought to bear to catch the individual.

American Express unveils Hawks Island at Pier 66 in time for Sunday’s game

Former Seahawk Marcus Trufant and other small business owners speak at event

The West Seattle Herald was offered the opportunity to tour and enjoy Hawks Island, a tailgate barge on Pier 66 created by American Express and free to their card holders. While the “island” will only be open for Sunday’s game against the Panthers it is one of the first signifiers of the multi-year partnership that was recently reached between the Seahawks and American Express.

Tickets to the island are “sold out” and there are no immediate plans to bring the barge back for future games but American Express has promised that this is a mere preview of things to come.

So, how was it? The island itself was approximately the size of two full basketball courts and featured cabanas, a recreation of the Century Link football field on the floor, a bandstand and offered some of the most breathe-taking views of the Seattle waterfront. It is strange to use the words “chic” and “sophisticated” to describe a tailgate venue but those would be the only descriptors that could do it justice.

Night Out for Nepal raises funds for earthquake victims

Sara Beth Dye organized a benefit event on Oct. 15 for Nepal's Children Emergency Relief via UNICEF Australia. Nepal's children face an unprecedented emotional toll as they deal with the devastating consequences of earthquakes. Two major earthquakes in April of 2015 killed more than 9000 people and injured more than 23,000. More than 100,000 people were left homeless when entire villages were flattened.

The benefit event was held at Duo’s on Avalon Way SW.

UNICEF has been on the ground since late April, but they still very much need support. The fundraising so far has generated more than $8000 for shelter for children whose homes have been destroyed, clean water for drinking and washing to prevent further spread of waterborne disease such as cholera, healthcare including vaccinations and vitamins, hygiene kits and facilities, educational materials to use while schools are being rebuilt, and psychosocial support for children who have experienced profound stress like the loss of a parent.

This cause is still in need of support. You can donate here

LETTER: Something to get excited about

Last night I attended my first West Seattle Time Bank (westseattletimebank.com soon to become .org) at the recomendation of a new friend that belongs to same.

Time banks (google it) are places where folks in a community volunteer hours at their convenience, doing what they like, to help others in their community. No money is involved to join. The old saying time is money is absolutely the case with this organization.

Time banks have been around for years and are all over the country.

For each hour of time you give doing the things for which you excel, you bank an hour of service from other time bank members for what you need.

Last night, I earned 4 hours! I earned an hour for attending the orientation, and hour for attending the meeting, an hour in advance for signing up to help with Festivas for the Sustainable West Seattle organization in December, and an hour for washing the dishes after the meeting.

How often can you say that you really got something for nothing?

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

This year's the Huling Bowl trophy is firmly in the hands of West Seattle High School following a 29-6 victory over nearby rival Chief Sealth at the Southwest Athletic Complex Friday.

The Wildcats took the lead to stay early, as Gabe Gangon threw a touchdown pass to Nate Pryor from 12 yards out with 4:52 to play in the first quarter. A pass for a two-point conversion failed to leave the score at 6-0.

Mathias Fink then slipped a 36-yard field goal through the uprights with 2:30 to go in the opening quarter to make it 9-0 and added a 30-yard field goal at the 5:04 mark of the second quarter to make it 12-0.

Gangon completed a pass to Pryor with 9:42 to go on the third quarter clock for a 59-yard touchdown play. Fink booted the extra point and it was 19-0.

Carter Golgart struck on a 3-yard run at 10:25 left in the fourth quarter and Joe Merlino kicked the extra point to up the advantage to 26-0.

You Are What You Eat: Fire up your food with hot peppers

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD

Food doesn’t have to taste flat when you give up salty foods that are bad for your body. There are five other flavors that your taste buds will enjoy: sweet, hot, bitter, sour and umami (the taste of slow-cooked proteins).

Sweet-hot combinations are among my favorites. If you add fresh herbs to sweet-hot recipe combos, you are also adding a third note, the bitter one, that makes food interesting.

The peppers in season right now are a great way to add heat to your flavor palate. My garden is bursting with shiny jalapenos, nicely rounded bell peppers, hot Thai chilies, mild banana peppers, plus my favorite, the round, red, and easy-to-fill cherry peppers.

When you work with peppers, it’s a good idea to wear latex gloves - the kind you use for painting or food service work. I have wiped my eye too many times with fingers covered in hot chili essence. Ouch!

Wildfire apricot jam

Ginger and jalapeno give this jam a nice kick.

3½ cups apricots (about 2½ pounds of fruit)
2-3 jalapeno peppers
1/3 cup lemon juice
5¾ cups sugar
¼ teaspoon butter
1 teaspoon powdered ginger

City moving forward with NW Market Street encampment

Ballard Chamber responds to Mayor’s decision

After considering six alternative sites for the transitional homeless encampment in Ballard, the City has decided to establish the transitional encampment site at its originally proposed location at 2826 NW Market Street.

The City announced this in a letter that was signed by Mayor Ed Murray and Councilmen Mike O’Brien.

“As we have begun to experience the fall and winter months, it is vital that we provide those experiencing homelessness with safe, secure places to stay as soon as possible. Due to the great need in our streets, we will move forward with siting an encampment at the Market Street location.”

The letter explained that the City worked with community stakeholders and the Ballard Chamber of Commerce in siting six other potential locations in the area. After a few weeks of examination the City found that not one of the sites were a good fit because of time constraints, need to change laws, lack of outreach to the nearby communities and probable environmental remediation to some sites.
