My work is exuberant. I respond to life and nature with a passionate need to depict, interpret and create. When I am at work in my studio, I spend countless hours contemplating a particular form and color in order to feel their energy. Inspiration comes from music, feelings, nature and travels, the stories I am so often told by other people, and my personal experiences.

Art class, intersections, and definitions

By Amanda Knox

Colin and I were driving home on a dark, rainy evening. The streets were hissing slick with wet. The lights from cars and traffic lights were bitingly bright. It had been a long day for the both of us, and I still had writing to do after another full day at the bookstore. Then we had each other on top of it all, distinct, separate beings, in it together.

We found ourselves stopped at the five-way intersection of 16th and Roxbury in White Center. It was rush hour, and lines of cars were crowding towards the crossroads from all directions. Pedestrians huddled in puffy coats beneath the street lamps. They looked cold.

“I find it interesting,” Colin mused, “That everyone stuck at this intersection right now is looking at it differently.”

All escape 2-alarm fire in SeaTac

All escape 2-alarm fire in SeaTac
A 2-alarm fire spared the lives of residents of a two-story apartment complex in SeaTac though it left all five units completely uninhabitable. Reports of the fire were called into 911 operators just after 8 a.m. on Sun., Nov. 5. Emergency responders quickly arrived to the complex, located on the 19200 block of 11th Pl. S. only to find that half the building was already engulfed in flames. Four of the five units were occupied at the time of the fire but everyone was able to escape part in thanks to two people passing by who noticed the fire and made sure everyone got out safely. The two good samaritans were treated for smoke inhalation. The Red Cross arrived on the scene to help the nearly twenty residents of the building find temporary housing. According to Captain Kyle Ohashi of the Kent Fire Department, the fire was caused by something being left too close to a baseboard heater. Fire fighters found that there was only one working fire alarm in the entire complex. Though fire-fighters were able to put the fire out quickly, the entire apartment building is now uninhabitable.

Bountiful Textures at Burien Arts Gallery too big for just one venue or one month

Burien Arts Gallery’ s biggest ever exhibit opens this week.
“Bountiful Textures” presents works in textiles by Fiber 19 artists at the Gallery, 826 S.W. 152nd St., and baskets by Patricia Galavin, beginning Thursday, Nov. 5.

The Gallery also features Artists United artists Janet Price and Marta Creswell. They are diverse artists who work in several different mediums.

Because the exhibit is just too bountiful for one venue, fiber artists Sonia Grasvik and Gail Wax are presenting their fine-art quilts across the street at Skinperfect, 905 S.W. 152nd St.

You can meet all the artists at the Opening Reception on Friday, Nov. 6 at the Gallery, 6-9 p.m.

Burien Arts Gallery exhibits usually run for a month but Bountiful Textures will be on display until Dec. 26.

Fiber 19 is an eclectic group of mixed media fiber artists who meet to visit, support, critique and show their art. They came together at the Fiber Arts Certificate Program at the University of Washington in 2008.
