Good for you: Rise and shine for Razor Clams

By Kathryn Kingen

It's 4:00 a.m. and pitch dark outside. Our family of eight is snuggled in sleeping bags in our camper … but there is a stirring about. My dad is shaking shoulders and whispering to any takers that it's time to rise and shine. If you're coming you better get up now because the low tide waits for no one! A few siblings roll over and groan but I'm surely up for this lantern-lit adventure. Digging razor clams with Dad was such a thrill. To this day the taste of pan-fried razors brings back the fondest of childhood memories.

Kitchen Talk: Get your gun; It's time for razor clam hunting!!!

by Chef Jeremy McLachlan

It's the time of year to start hunting and my favorite is hunting razor clams. Yes, I said razor clams. These delicate beauties are caught up and down the Washington Coast, but the best place to find them is Long Beach, Washington. They're also good for you, as Kathy Kingen says in her blog Rise and Shine for Razor Clams. Here's what you need to know about hunting Washington razor clams:

You have two options for hunting and digging up clams. Use a clam shovel (basically a thin shovel with a long handle) or a clam gun, which I prefer because it is a whole lot easier. It's best to hunt these beauties when the tide is going out. To catch a razor clam, look for air bubbles in the sand along the beach close to the water's edge (hit the sand to make them appear). Then once you see one: Dig baby dig! But be careful digging with your hand because the shells are sharp. This is where the shovel is useful!

Update: Ballard High School locked down after student was suspected with gun

      Update 3:45 p.m.

Capt. Sean O'Donnell of Seattle Police North Precinct, and Stacy Howard from Seattle Public Schools made a statement outside the school as students were being released.

O’Donnell reported that around 11 a.m. Seattle police received a report that a student saw another student possessing a gun.

Seattle police responded to the scene within five minutes, and while at the school they received a report that the suspect was seen at a nearby restaurant. O’Donnell did not report which restaurant, but the police scanner indicated that is was the Taco Bell just a couple blocks south of the school on 15th Avenue N.W.

Seattle SWAT was called to both the restaurant and the school.

“We responded to both the restaurant and to the school and initiated protocols that are standard in situations like this for someone with a weapon near a school,” said O’Donnell.

Officers located “several” possible suspects at the restaurant, and they were taken into custody and brought back to the school. O’Donnell would not comment on just how many suspects they are questioning. None of the suspects were carrying a gun.

Zagat says 4 out of 10 of the best burgers in Seattle are here; Swinery voted number 1

Travel authority Zagat has posted a list of the 10 Best Burgers in Seattle and West Seattle/White Center restaurants dominated with four out of the ten making the list.

Voted number one was The Swinery. Here's what Zagat said:

      "1. The Swinery
      Butcher Shop West Seattle
At this tiny West Seattle butcher shop, one thing you won't find in the display cases is the "expertly prepared" burger.

Must-Order: The Swinery burger ($11) is made with one-third pound of fluffy in-house ground beef, creamy caramelized onions, and housemade crunchy pickles. Pick your cheese — there's cheddar, provolone, blue or Swiss — and always get the Swinery sauce. Add house-cured bacon ($2) or crispy pork belly ($3) for even more meaty goodness.

      3207 California Ave. SW; 206-932-4211"

Coming in at number four was the undeniably unique Zippy's Giant Burgers in White Center:

UPDATE: District 1 race tightens but Braddock still leads; Margin down to six votes with more ballots uncounted

      Update Nov. 9 6:00pm
The lead that Shannon Braddock has held over Herbold has now shrunken to a mere six votes in the latest update from King County election data.

      Lisa Herbold
      49.70% - 11522 votes

      Shannon Braddock
      49.73% - 11528 votes

This means a recount is virtually assured. Some ballots still remain to be counted and the tally won't be announced until Wednesday.

      Update Nov. 9, 9:50am

The thin margin Shannon Braddock has held over Lisa Herbold in the City Council Dist. 1 race has shrunk again, With around 3000 ballots yet to be tallied the difference between the two candidates has shrunk to 95 votes. The rules that trigger a recount are somewhat involved (see this link) but in general can be triggered by request, if a machine count is less than 2000 votes, or if a manual count is less than 150 votes.
