Burien declared one of the top ten 'Fastest growing small cities in America'

But annexation is big factor in city growth

According to career advice website Zippia.com, Burien is one of the top ten "fastest growing small cities in America. They state "This Washington city has undergone huge growth in the past several years, jumping from a population of 32,743 in 2010 to 49,291 in 2014. That’s an increase of over 16,500 people!

So what’s the big deal about this city? Well, it’s charming—whether you’re in the (relatively newly) renovated downtown, or Olde Burien. It’s surrounded by some of the most beautiful nature in the country. And it’s just a short commute to all that Seattle has to offer. It’s the ideal not-too-big and not-terribly-expensive Pacific Northwest home base."

According to the Gallup organization 50% of small businesses fail within five years. They point out that the primary reason they either succeed or fail is the business owner. That means Cary Kemp, owner of Pizzeria 22 in the Admiral District is exceptional.

Brief Fauntleroy Expressway on-ramp closure Thursday evening

information from SDOT

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) advises travelers in West Seattle that the on-ramp from surface Spokane Street onto the eastbound direction of the Fauntleroy Expressway (adjacent to the Nucor plant) will be closed for a short time on Thursday evening, June 30, beginning at 7 p.m. in order for the contractor to replace its bearing pads. During the short closure, motorists seeking to use this on-ramp will instead be detoured to the nearby Delridge on-ramp.

It is expected that the surface street Spokane on-ramp will be reopened by 9 p.m. The mainline Expressway closure Thursday evening will NOT begin until the on-ramp has been reopened.

The Fauntleroy Expressway Bearing Pad Replacement Project began with its first weeknight closure of the Expressway in mid-May and is nearing its completion.

Pat's View: Tricks of My Father

By Pat Cashman

I was thinking of my dad the other day. It happens often.

He would have been 94 a couple of weeks ago---would have been. He fell just short by thirty years.

I sure do wish he were still around. There are things I would like to ask him about himself. Things he said and did---especially around my four brothers and me. I would just want to ask him, “What was that all about?”

Before you jump to conclusions, the guy was a great dad. He was a big bear of a man---and at 6 foot 6, a gentle giant. Ever notice, by the way, how large men are described as ‘gentle giants?’ You never read obituaries describing someone as a ‘belligerent ogre.’
You also never read: “He hated kids, animals, the outdoors, spending time with his family and walks on the beach. He was a miserable wretch.”

But back to my dad, who was none of that.

He was a man who occasionally tried to impress upon us that he knew things and had powers that other humans did not possess---and that if we paid attention, we too might learn them.

Amanda's View: Photographing Women: Waters, Reds, Writings, Wraps

By Amanda Knox

Prior to the final stage of Dawndra’s and my collaboration—the composition phase—Dawndra was very much a team-player, even more so than I expected. First, getting to know each other required a spirit of openness and imagination, because the information we gathered about ourselves, and the imagery we brainstormed, became our project’s subject material. Then, getting out in the field, setting up materials, posing and photographing, Dawndra and I each poured our physical energy into our shared ideas. Dawndra photographed, directed, encouraged—she even laid a towel over the bands of sharp pebbles on the beach so I wouldn’t cut my feet which were already frozen from wading in the Puget Sound. Finally, in this last stage, Dawndra took the reins, and I was eager to step back and witness her vision coalesce, and in what ways. What emerged is a series of portraits that sought to convey my inner world in response to my external one during a particular period in my life.

'Up' house owners still planning fate of property as Macefield Music Festival celebrates fourth year

The Macefield Music Festival is in its fourth year in Ballard and recently announced its line-up. Meanwhile, the reason for the festivities, a tribute to Edith Macefield holding out on selling her home in the face of gentrification and development, remains in question: Edith’s house.

The structure that used to be Edith’s house at 1438 N.W. 46th Street has become a bit of an eye sore: the windows are boarded up; the grass is either overgrown or not there at all; strings tied to balloons long blown out and other remnants sag from the fence around the property.

John Speirs with KG Investments manages the property for PEFB at 46 LLC Ballard, an investment group and affiliate for Ballard Locks.

Speirs said he and his employers are working with architects to determine the best use for the space.

“We are working with architects to see what would be a good fit. There are lots of ideas, so we are kind of working through all the them to see what’s most feasible and makes the most sense,” said Speirs.
