Mayor Murray and Seattle City Council nominate appointees for the Community Involvement Commission

information from the City of Seattle

Mayor Edward Murray and the Seattle City Council announced their appointees to the City’s new Community Involvement Commission (CIC). Created by Executive Order 2016-06 issued by Mayor Murray last year, the 16-member commission will advise the City on priorities, policies, and strategies related to equitable civic engagement and public participation in City decision-making processes. It will also provide feedback on the development of City departments’ community involvement plans.

“In order for Seattle to reach its full potential, all residents including those representing underrepresented and underserved communities must have the opportunity to participate in the City’s decision making and planning processes,” said Mayor Murray. “The commissioners will have a critical role in guiding the City toward more accessible and equitable community engagement, and I look forward to their ideas and counsel so that the City’s efforts ensure that all voices are heard.”

Star chef Cameron Hanin brings art and craft to the Ma’ono kitchen

By Lindsay Peyton

There’s something surprisingly – and refreshingly – humble about chef Cameron Hanin.

Even though he was named Seattle Rising Star Chef in 2015 and has paid his dues in some of the top kitchens in the country, he still has an air of comfortable familiarity.

And when he takes a break from preparing for the dinner service at West Seattle’s Ma’ono to plop down for an interview, it feels like talking to an old friend, one who will give you a hard time if you ask a dumb question or are dating the wrong guy, but one who would just as surely lend you a hand if you were ever in trouble.

That no-nonsense honesty comes through in Hanin’s cooking.

“I like careful cooking,” he said. “It could be three things on the plate with no modern techniques or it could be a real show-stopper, as long as it’s cooked with care, cooked with love.”

These days he’s cooking Ma’ono owner and chef Mark Fuller’s recipes, odes to a Hawaiian heritage.

But Hanin is no stranger to frying up a chicken just right or perfectly showcasing a fresh ingredient.

West Seattle development; How many apartments, how many parking spaces?

By Gwen Davis

It’s the infamous story of Seattle: too many cars and not enough parking spaces.

Unfortunately, a proposed development in the West Seattle Junction might compound the situation even more for Junction residents.

The proposed four-story building, dubbed Junction Landing, containing 58 units and four live-work units with parking for 29 vehicles at 4417 42nd Ave SW is making its way through the city’s design review process.

On Thursday, the West Seattle design review board was presented with the latest plans by developers.

And on Friday morning, the Hope Lutheran School, a neighbor of the development, submitted a letter of concern to the city:

"We would like to address our concerns as it relates to parking,” the public letter stated. The current West Seattle Junction neighborhood plan "recommends a goal of balancing a developing compact urban village with the need for adequate parking by not adversely affecting existing charter of the neighborhood,” the school wrote.

Shalimar Gonzales, shaking things up at the West Seattle YMCA

By Lindsay Peyton

Not only did the West Seattle YMCA recently receive a facelift – but the location also recruited a new face to serve at its helm.

Shalimar Gonzales took over as executive director just a couple of weeks ago – and is eager to put her stamp on the place.

Gonzales spent the past three years as executive director at the Meredith Matthews East Madison YMCA, where her main mission was “making sure the Y represents the community we’re trying to serve and that we create safe spaces for everyone.”

Now she wants to do the same thing in a different neighborhood.

As Gonzales walks through the newly improved West Seattle YMCA, she is visibly brimming with excitement. A new family wing is one of her favorite parts, and she reports recently challenging a teenager to shoot some hoops in the “Tween Zone.”

A number of storage closets and seldom-used rooms have been converted to more functional spaces, she added.
