The camp will focus on three pillars, 1) skill development, 2) teamwork and leadership, and 3) life values and traits. We at Chief Sealth feel that in order to truly be successful student-athletes we must work equally in all three areas.

Jean's View: The Newcomers' Survival Guide

By Jean Godden

As we know, Seattle is now knee-deep in newcomers. Number crunchers say that 57 newbies arrive every single day. That influx has pushed the city's population up to 704,352.

Johnny and Joanie-come-latelies flock to Seattle attracted by interesting jobs, matchless scenery, mild climate, mouthwatering cuisine and the rhetoric of city boosters. They're drawn Chamber of Commerce hypsters who gave us catchphrases like "Say WA" and "Metronatural -- it's what makes Seattle unique" as well as the spell-checker slogan: "See-AT-L."

Now that we have squads of tenderfeet in our midst, what's needed is an updated version of "The Official Rules of Seattle," tips to help newcomers assimilate. Here are some basics:

Rule One. Never discard anything whatsoever without placing it in the proper bin. When I worked at the Seattle Times, there was even a bin for "Styrofoam peanuts."

Pat's View: Father’s Day Photos

By Pat Cashman

Father’s Day is coming up this week---and so is my dad’s 95th birthday. I sure wish he was here to celebrate both occasions---but he’s been gone for thirty years. He was always my “old man” even though he never actually became one.

Digging through a bunch of photos the other day, I came across one from Father’s Day, 1964. I was startled. It was a photo of our entire family: My four brothers, our mom---and me dutifully facing the camera, posing in a conventional manner.

Except for Dad. He is facing backwards. Why? Maybe he thought the camera was located behind him. Or perhaps he was trying to demonstrate his love of the past. Or maybe he was showing off a new haircut. My guess? He did it because it looked funny.

The photo startled me because for all these years, I thought I was the one in our family who invented weird photo posing. But as I looked through other old pictures, I realized that shticky stuff was a regular part of my pop’s style.
