Kela activated, may become closer

Chief Sealth graduate Keone Kela was activated off the disabled list by the struggling Texas Rangers on Thursday and may be moved to the closer role out of the bullpen.

"I can see Kela there," said manager Jeff Banister in an article by the Rangers' public relations department. "He has all the elements -- mentality, pitches, attitude -- to do that. Right now it's all about getting back on the mound and being conservative on how we use him."

Kela, who had been out since June 27 because of a sore shoulder, has a 4-1 record for the Rangers with a 2.64 earned run average and one save.

He has 42 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched with only 13 walks.

Terjung's Studio of Gifts is a West Seattle institution

Gregor Terjung at 87 comes to work seven days a week; He competes in the digital age by having none of it

No website, no Facebook page, not even an email account. No advertising, no special sales, no marketing.

Yet ever since 1968 Gregor Terjung has made his Terjung's Studio of Gifts in the West Seattle Junction a success. Now 87, he says he's thinking about retirement noting that he has a son in law that retired at 65. But that day is a ways off, since for he and his daughter Gail, the shop is a labor of love.

Competing in a world seemingly dominated by digital sales would seem next to impossible, but the store relies on the power of immediacy (no waiting for delivery), sentiment (most of the items in the store are meant to be given from one person to another, not sent via truck), and relationships. Not just between his customers and their families and friends but with the community at large.

Terjung has such a long history, that the vast majority of his customers are people who have shopped with him for decades.

He's been in business for 48 years.

BY GERARDO BOLONG

FEDERAL WAY - A great journey finally ended for an area baseball team.

Power hitting District II Bainbridge bombed away to a 21-13 six-inning, three - hour victory against District VII Pac West in a loser - out game of the 2017 Washington State Little League 12U Majors All Star baseball tournament held at the Federal Way National League Complex on Mon., July 17. The game ended on Field No. 1 with gathering darkness necessitating a move to a field with lights.

"Most of these players have been together for three years," observed District 7 Manager Luke Hagler. "There have been good friendships on and off the field. They like to hang together. This has been a great team with fun kids. They stay in the game. I treat them like my own. It's the end of an era. I've coached many of them since they were five or six years old."
