Help protect vulnerable family members from scam artists

If you have older family members whose cognitive functions or decision-making abilities have declined, or who are lonely or recently widowed, you might need to help protect them against financial scams. What steps should you take?


First of all, try to gain a good sense of their overall financial activity. Look for red flags, such as a reluctance to discuss money matters, consistently unpaid bills, unexplained withdrawals, mysterious wire transfers or a sudden need to purchase large quantities of gift cards. And watch out for new “best friends” or caretakers who show an unusual interest in your loved one’s finances.
Whether or not you’ve observed any of these activities, you can help your elderly family members by making these moves:

34th District Candidate Forum set for July 24 in White Center

A community based town hall conversation with the 34th District candidates is coming up July 24 in White Center. Sponsored by the White Center Community Development Association, the White Center Chamber of Commerce and TommySound/Speed of Sound Studios the event promises "An opportunity to ask questions of individual candidates" Aaron Garcia will be the moderator for the discussion.

They are running for the seat vacated by the retiring Sen. Sharon Nelson.

Adah Cruzen shines her light again; Donation of $100,000 made to West Seattle Senior Center

Meal services, health and wellness programs, infrastructure, new computers and point of sale system all funded by gift

Only a couple of months after donating $100,000 to a fund to restore the murals of West Seattle, Adah Cruzen wife of the late Earl Cruzen has steppe forward to help another part of the community. She was honored on July 10 with a special luncheon at the West Seattle Senior Center. Executive Director of the Senior Center Lyle Evans wrote about her donation and how it came about for the Senior Center newsletter:

"Last month the Center was approached by a member of the community who asked what the Center needed in order to continue and enhance operations. I provided a wish list, not knowing the impact that list would have. About three weeks later, Adah Cruzen invited me to her home for lunch.

The Greenlife Festival, happening during with the West Seattle Summer Fest and street fair will focus on the issues surrounding the failing Southern Resident Killer Whale population and the health of the Salish Sea. There are many solvable issues connected to the decline of our local waters including the Puget Sound. 

We will examine these issues at the Junction Plaza Park location.

Banh Mi varieties are the focus at new Oh's Sandwiches

Traditional Vietnamese Banh Mi Sandwiches are the main menu item at the new Oh's Sandwiches at 3217 California Ave SW. The new shop is a family run business and offers four varieties including pork, grilled chicken, tofu or a ham, headcheese and Pate combination. All sandwiches are very affordable at $4.95.

If you've never had a Banh Mi sandwich you might be surprised. 

A typical Vietnamese sandwich is a selection of meats and vegetables from native Vietnamese cuisine such as grilled pork or pork sausage, grilled chicken, or ham plus coriander (cilantro) , cucumber, and pickled carrots and daikon combined with condiments from French cuisine such as pate along with jalapeno peppers and mayonnaise. They are served on fresh french bread loaves. In Vietnam they are often consumed for breakfast.

National, PacWest stay alive

South Highline National and PacWest kept their chanpionship hopes alive with victories in the loser's bracket of the District 7 Major Little League baseball all-star tournament Monday.

National dealt the Rainier District team a 5-3 defeat while PacWest was on the other Bar-S diamond shutting out Southwest, 5-0.

National plays PacWest at 6 p.m. Tuesday, when West Seattle will be on the other Bar-S field playing Renton in the winner's bracket final.

The National vs. PacWest winner plays the West Seattle vs. Renton loser in the loser's bracket final at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The provisional championship is at 6 p.m. Thursday with the if-necessary game at 6 p.m. Friday.

The champion advances to state play in Sedro Woolley starting Saturday, July 21.
