Window into the art world: Burien offers unique gallery experience

By Lindsay Peyton

Burien invites residents and guests a chance to discover a masterpiece here and an art installation there.

The city’s art windows can be found in its central Town Square—at the Maverick Apartments, on the corner of 6th and 150th SW, and Merrill Gardens Senior Living, on 4th Ave SW between 150th St. and 151st St.

Alisa Savage, arts coordinator for the City of Burien, curates the displays. She took on the project late last year and selected artists with work that suited the window-scapes.

“I was super excited to be able to display artwork in such unique spaces,” Savage said. “And these big giant windows are great exposure for the artists.”

In July, two new artists put their work on display. Tory Franklin’s exhibit “Remnant Reweaving” is up at the Maverick, and Heather Danso’s “Facets” is in the windows at Merrill Gardens.

West Seattle Trusteed Partners issues statement on future of Junction parking lots

The questions lingering over the future of parking in the West Seattle Junction are still hanging, unanswered but the West Seattle Trusteed Properties has issued a statement that outlines their position on the future of the lots that provide spaces for so many shoppers. The WSTP cites "City of Seattle no longer supports the preservation of surface parking rather, the County now taxes WSTP Inc. parcels at their "highest and best use" for mixed use construction development and other similar uses. Therefore, the WSTP and area businesses face threats to its current parking model, not only from increasing property taxes but also from condemnation by the Regional Transportation Authority and the probable conversion of free street parking to metered parking..

By Gwen Davis

Summer vacation may be hot, but it's still perfect for practicing sports.

On Thursday evening, the Seattle Storm held its fourth annual community practice for youth ages six to 14 at Seattle Christian School in SeaTac. The free event was presented with Kaiser Permanente, and was part of its StormFit program, which also features basketball clinics and camps for youth.

Over 100 children participated, and the stands were packed with their parents and families.

“It was a great event,” said Storm assistant coach, Crystal Robinson. “I had a lot of fun with the kids.”

The two-hour practice gave participants the chance to practice their basketball skills with other kids. It also featured games, prizes, autographs, an appearance from the team mascot, and a performance by the Storm Dance Troupe. Storm players facilitated the activities.
